MARK KOZELEK: ALL MIXED UP - San Francisco Chronicle

The Smiths, "I Know It's Over" (1985)

"I discovered the Smiths in my late teens," Kozelek says. "I moved to Atlanta from Ohio and that was a turning point from all the things I had grown up with. I started to explore bands like R.E.M. and the Dead Kennedys, all these other artists that were doing stuff in a completely different way. When I heard a guy like Morrissey, who was pouring his heart out in this way that was very real, this clarity and emotion, he gave me hope as a singer. It wasn't possible for me to sound like the people I grew up with like Bon Scott or Jon Anderson, but with Morrissey it was more about what he was saying. So it made me think, 'I can also be a singer. I have some things to say, too.' "

  • in a room all i feel
is the cold that you left
through the air all i see
is your face full of blame
    what's left to see

There is only one other person besides Kozelek who could reasonably sing these lyrics.

  • RHP were terribly important for me in my late teens and it's nice to see Mark Kozelek saying that Moz was an influence for him. I always found a similarity between the two (even though Kozelek might not write as funny lyrics as Moz).
And oh, "Katy Song" might just be one of the most beautiful songs in the world.

  • This is interesting in the sense that I think it's the first time that Mark Kozelek has ever made any remote mention of Morrissey as an influence. As a huge RHP, and current Kozelek fan, I always thought that the two had a lot in common.

By the way, Mark Kozelek can make a cover song sound like his own more than anyone else I know, other than the late Jeff Buckley.

He recently released a Modest Mouse cover album, and I was stunned by his ability to make their songs sound so much more important. He's a very unique folk artist in that sense.

  • Somewhat of a masterpiece.

  • Ghosts of the Great Highway by sun kil moon is one of my favourite albums and i urge everyone to give it a listen. It makes an excellent put-it-on-quietly-while-youre-laying-in-bed-album, i find. By coincidence i am listening to it as i read this article.

  • I've always loved RHP too, and to read this remark is surprising.
I went to Liverpool earlier this year to See Mark K play and it was wonderful, i left just before the end of the gig to catch a train. I got to the station nearby, missed the end of the gig, missed the train, and waited 5 hrs in the cold to get home. But it was worth every second!
Hope he comes back to the U.K.(North)soon.
