The Smiths stripped bare - The Telegraph

A new stage musical daringly brings a feminine slant - and a string quartet - to the magical, jangly songs of Morrissey and Johnny Marr. Dominic Cavendish meets the show's creators

The Telegraph carries their report on the forthcoming musical today, including the following interesting quote from Andrew Wale, who is directing the show:

"We were surprised that Morrissey agreed to it," he adds, "but he's an intelligent man. He must realise that this represents people's real appreciation of those songs and desire to keep them alive through re-examining them."

  • I was concerned at first as to how the songs would be interpreted and if it would be overly "camp." This production appears to be thoughtful, intelligent, respectful, and very creative.

Any chance it will be released on DVD or webcast for the rest of us?

  • T"hat such gender-switching tactics have been countenanced, and such artistic licence granted, by Morrissey and Marr, who have remained estranged since the Smiths split, is no small wonder."

This kind of thing has gone out of fashion in the last few years, and makes this production all the most fascinating. Hope it travels.

  • From the ice-age to the dole-age
    There is but one concern
    I have just discovered :

Some girls are bigger than others
Some girls are bigger than others
Some girl's mothers are bigger than
    Other girl's mothers

Some girls are bigger than others
Some girls are bigger than others
Some girl's mothers are bigger than
    Other girl's mothers

    As Anthony said to Cleopatra
As he opened a crate of ale :

    Oh, I say :
Some girls are bigger than others
Some girls are bigger than others
Some girl's mothers are bigger than
    Other girl's mothers

Some girls are bigger than others
Some girls are bigger than others
Some girl's mothers are bigger than
    Other girl's mothers

    Send me the pillow ...
The one that you dream on ...
    Send me the pillow ...
The one that you dream on ...
    And I'll send you mine
