Really So Strange writes:
At last nights (18th June) 'Songs of Innocence' gig, part of Patti Smith's Meltdown festival, Billy Bragg made reference to Morrissey.

Before starting a Guthrie cover, Billy said "this song is about being a child and wetting the bed...which reminds me of a dark winters night I spent at Morrissey's house."

Other contributers to tonights gig included: Marianne Faithful, Tim Booth (James), Patti Smith and Sinead O'Connor.

  • I loved "Ain't nuthin' going on but The Rent". Did Billy do that one?

    Off the hook!

  • Billy Bragg mentions Morrissey at every gig. He's the "Workingman's Morrissey".

  • Yeah, he did stay at Morrissey's house once - there's a bizarre story behind it too. Someone will have to fill in the blanks here but didn't Bragg once tell a tale about staying over at Morrissey's and Jimmy Sommerville was there and he went to bed and the bed had a blue, medical plastic sheet on it which you use if you've got a habit of wetting the bed? It was something like that.

There are loads of strange stories about queer occurances chez Moz. Like the famous Suggs one when he turned up to find the door open and wandered in to find Morrissey blindfolded with a stick trying to feel his way around the living room listening to some Turkish folk music or something.

The plastic bed sheets are the oddest though. I like to think that it suits Morrissey's sense of humour to have them fitted to a guests bed without any explanation, or "Just in case, Billy."
  • January 1984. I am a fresh young thing hanging out at Danceteria in New York City. The Smiths had just played their first US gig a week or so before. A man walks up and starts taunting me - "Did you see the Smiths? Did you cry? Did you throw flowers? Ooh Morrissey - I love you Ooo.." stuff like that. He was very aggressive and animated - absolutely in my face.

It was Billy Bragg. He has been obsessed for a long time...

If Moz did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him.
