One last 'Hit' may finally knock out '80s - New York Daily News

Excerpt:

Hang up those skinny ties and stop quoting John Hughes movies: The beginning of the end of '80s nostalgia is upon us...

Nostalgic Gen-Xers have taken comfort in their coming-of-age era at least since 1998, when "The Wedding Singer," Adam Sandler's love letter to 1985, helped start the fire.

Since then, VH1's "We Love the '80s" and "Bands Reunited" helped influence current bands like the Bravery, Arcade Fire and the Killers - who helped create a demand for "classic" acts that hadn't been popular since the end of the Cold War, like Duran Duran, Mötley Crüe and Morrissey...

  • Am I the only person who thinks this is brilliant news. HURRAH no more mullets and dark washed jeans with enormous turn ups on them, and proper shit trainers from the market. You british will know what I'm on about, I cringe with horror whenever I see eighties photographs.
Morrissey on the other hand, never failed NOT to look amazing.

  • Here in Portland, OR, there are several clubs that have 80s music nights. In fact, the number have doubled since just a couple months ago. Maybe that's a sign that it's about to end, or maybe it's a sign that we need to dance, dance, dance!

The Wedding Singer is my favorite comedy. Everything about it is perfect -- the music, the hair, the clothes, the slang, the DeLorean, the nightclub scene, the Miami Vice references, the Michael Jackson glove and jacket... . This movie sums up all that was memorable and unique about the 80's.

Let's not forget that The Smiths were also a product of the eighties. Anyone in their thirties can relate to this 80's nostalgia. So, while we may not be going clubbing any longer, we are now sitting in front of the tube watching shows that remind us of those glory days.

I watched "Hit Me Baby One More Time" last week. It was hilarious to see Loverboy singing an old tune, that I actually used to like. Too bad the singer was no longer sporting those tight, red leather pants. Just kidding!

  • so according to the article. the band the bravery and the kilers were influenced by VH1 TV shows. i hardly see that. and morrissey releasing an album has nothing to do with the killers or the bravery. the killers weren't even popular when morrissey went to the recording studio with YATQ and he's been touring throughout the time between 1997 and 2004. i could go on and on but really one can only blame the reporter for not researching. but it's good to see that morrissey is being noticed now, even though he has been around (unlike the other bands that retired and reunited).
