Radio 1 in the UK are running the Best Manchester Band competition as part of Five Decades of Radio 1. The final is this Friday, and in today's heats The Smiths were pipped of a place in the final by the Stone Roses. Oasis and Joy Division have already made the final. The listeners vote in and decide which bands can compete in the heats, so I think the Smiths may get another chance tomorrow.

TODAY'S RESULTS

1. The Stone Roses
2. The Smiths
3. James

the top four or five depending on how you're counting are without a doubt Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, The Smiths and The Stone Roses. after that its a juste a jumble of the likes of James, Doves and The Charlatans UK.

id say The Smiths should easily hav topped The Stone Roses- who were a fine band, but not as great and influential as The Smiths nor do they hava catalogue that can honestly rival that of The Smiths.

the only real competition to The Smiths should really be Joy Division/New Order. if you seperate the two id say The Smiths should take it without question, but combined it gets rather closer to call. even if you combine Moz's solo work to The Smiths catalogue to compare to Joy Division/New Order it's still a well run race. still, ithink any way you cut it, The Smiths or The Smiths/Moz shouldve taken this title by a clear margin, therefore whatever the results of the final they are surely wrong.

id say this order would suit me:

    The Smiths [or The Smiths/Moz]
Joy Division [or Joy Division/New Order]
    Oasis
The Stone Roses [or The Stone Roses/Ian Brown]
    New Order*

*if you seperate out New Order from Joy Division

I'm not going to get in a full blown argument... but even those 90s retro nothings Superjoke have more musical talent than Oasis. It's not hard. The test of a good band is whether they can diversify into lots of different areas, and still keep their sound whilst at the same time not sounding all the same. There is ONE band in the nineties 'indie' scene that did this- Blur.

Check out b-side "Swallows In The Heatwave" where they actually out-Oasis Oasis... in fact even Ride managed to do a better Oasis-type sound in 1994 before Noel et Liam had got huge on their cover of "How Does It Feel To Feel?", as found on the excellent "Carnival Of Light" album. The same goes for the Charlatans circa 96, although their attempt was less fantastic... but it's still more worthy than anything in Oasis' back catalogue.

I myself almost fell for it with "Live Forever" back in 94 and nearly bought the album but before I made the mistake countless millions did I saw through the hype and realised there was no depth to it.

So they released one mediocre album that people say "is untouchable" just because they associate it with being pissed up and young, a second album that proved they only knew one trick (Sunsheeeiiiine *jangly guitar/overblown production*) and then after that countless more where they actually became a cover band of themselves. But of course, by then the millions were devoted and did not want to admit they were fooled, and so continued to compound their original error.

It's indie music for people who don't like indie music. Just like Mouldplay, Crevis, The Stereomanics et AL.

"Leyla" sounds like "Blockbuster" by The Sweet. I don't need to say anything else.

  • Oasis are the most current band - given their audience presumably Oasis will be voted number 1 despite the merits of any other band

Do my eyes deceive me, or is Senna's Lotus sounding rough?
  • The opening guitar on the opening track on the new Oasis album could very easily be a Smithsian Moz-solo track. Then it turns all standard Oasis before returning to the chiming guitars for the outro.
