Here it is, the new and improved Morrissey-solo. Doesn't look much different, but basically everything is cleaner and faster. The move this weekend went very well. The updated code (last update was 2 years ago) is running on a new server (last upgrade was 5 years ago).

Among the new features I'm experimenting with are subscriptions. I'm using the slashdot model - $5.00 per 1000 pages (more info). Subscriptions are completely optional but there are a few small benefits. One is that subscribers can see stories about an hour before non-subscribers. I estimate for average users that works out to about $10 - $15 per year. I have credited those userids I have on record who sent donations over the past several years (to the site and also charity drives) with equivalent subscriptions. There are several I have not been able to match - I will send out an email soon to those I have emails for but if you have contributed in the past and don't see subscription credits (check here), let me know. Thanks to all supporters and content contributors for making Morrissey-solo what it is.

Thanks also go to the team behind slashdot for the privilege of using their code which powers the site.

Since there were many changes there are bound to be some glitches so let me know if you see anything strange. As always, feedback and suggestions are also welcome to [email protected]. Click 'Read More' to see more details of the upgrade.

- New server is a 1U dual Xeon 3.2 GHz with 2GB RAM. The old server is still in place used as an image / mail server.

- New user interface and messaging options. Check your preferences for new user options.

- Friends and Foes. For journal users, you can be notified when a friend updates their journal. You can also now prevent foes or anonymous people from posting to your journal, by choosing 'No Foes' as the comments option. The friends and foes list for each user are public so just be aware of that. The previous friends list has been reset so you'll have to re-add your friends if you had some previously. I apologize for the hassle.

  • David, thanks for continuing on with what is one of the best fan sites on the web. Morrissey-solo really is peerless. You've done a great job, and I'll pony up some cash for a subscription when the time comes.

Please all, if you can, get a subscription or buy a bunch to cover a year or a few years. I just bought 6 of them. I am proud to be a participating member of this site.

  • Great site and all and I am sure it is worth paying for but... Isn't it expensive being a Morrissey fan now? I am having to take out a second mortgage to pay for all this stuff.

Maybe Blue Peter (a UK Kids TV show)could have "distressed Morrissey fans" for their appeal this year?

  • ...a one-off "lifetime" membership fee ?.

I`m sure a reasonable charge in the region of, say $20-$50, would be acceptable to those who come here often.

    Any takers ?!
