The Sydney Morning Herald website features an article on the 10 greatest touring bands that didn't make it down under. The Smiths are featured at number 3 in a list that also includes The Jam and The Grateful Dead.

Here is the excerpt relating to The Smiths:

"They were favourites with Triple J audiences and, to their fans, one of the greatest bands of their generation. It is hard to know what the fey Morrissey, with flowers dangling from his back pocket and enough introspection to send the average upfront Aussie into a frenzy, would have made of Australian audiences at the time.

Morrissey came out years after they split up, but the magic of a cutting-edge band had been lost. The non-appearance of the Smiths was pure economics. No promoter would risk the money. They knew that a dozen people in Surry Hills and Newtown weren't enough to fill a decent venue."

"The magic of a cutting edge band has been lost", what would any Aussies know about cutting edge bands.

        Minogue!!

        Donovan!!

        Stefan Dennis!!!

I think The Smiths arriving on Australian shores would have got more than a dozen people in attendance, the writer is obviously a moron.
