Smiths legend Marr in tune with charity

Excerpt:

And despite the recent Manchester shows of former The Smiths singer Morrissey, Johnny says he has not been in touch with his former colleague.

He added: "We don't bother having a relationship as we don't make music together. We just have a tenuous business relationship."

Uncleskinny also writes:

A journalist contacted me saying he himself had been asked by the Moz camp to convey to the fans that this reunion isn't going to happen. He asked me to convey this to Morrissey-solo.com on his behalf.

  • Who cares, The subject is getting old. Why do people bother asking Johnny to work with Moz.
    "Its not gonna happen someday"

  • Hey, at least they have a relationship to speak of now. Business relationship which may or may not develop into a musical relationship. I think this is a good sign.

  • Is NOT going to happen. EVER. I wish everyone would get over it.
We should ban the "Moz and Marr reunion rumor" from this site.

  • I think the only possible way it would happen would be when they're both sixty-something... and it obviously wouldn't be a Smiths reunion, just Moz & Marr. This is a weird concept but I've seen it happen before when artists get old.

That is, unless, this is Moz' last tour, as he seems to be hinting at at the end of the concerts he's played in Boston and Phillie.

Does anyone R E A L L Y see Moz putting out another album in the next 3 or 4 years? By the time he'd tour with it he'd be 50 or older. Perhaps his ego is too big to strut around a stage at that point. I am truly worried this is the last of Moz. Thoughts?

    • I definitely think this might be the last tour, for the following reasons:

      1. His health and ability to keep up with the current tour hasn't been the greatest, and he may be realizing he's getting to old for this.

      2. I'm sure he doesn't want to be a hypocrite and turn into Jagger (remember "Get off the Stage"?).

      3. This was supposed to be his big comeback, and I think he might be realizing that from here, there's no where to go but down.

      4. Ending his solo career wouldn't mean ending his contribution to music. He has the Attack label now, it would make sense for him to change his focus to finding quality young bands.

      5. He has to have time to work on his autobiography!

  • Why doesn't Johnny just pop a finished guitar tracks in the mail to Mozzy and Mozzy can hum along to them until the words come...

To avoid the $ bullshit, they can donate all proceeds to their favourite charities...

marr's playing currently sucks out the ass.

moz is better off steering well clear of his former pal.

I too have a feeling this is Moz's last tour, particularly when he told the NME in May that he "wouldn't sing when [he was] 50". But that also debars studio albums, which I feel would be an absolutely appalling loss. Touring - well, you see, he needs to feel comfortable with it, physically and emotionally, because it's so gruelling. He has incredibly high standards for his live shows. If he feels he's getting less able to deliver on those, then I can see him contemplating finishing that aspect. But why stop making studio albums? He doesn't need to tour them. He doesn't need to put his face on the cover if he's worried about looking older - there's got to be many a beautiful monochrome still left for him to use! His voice is now at its best - let's hope he doesn't just give up and squander it. There are also some other things which I feel, and they are:

    a) that this 'comeback' has seen a superb tour, but, for me at any rate, a lacklustre album, despite the odd shining moment. Musically, I feel he'll have gone out on a whimper if he ends it now. Yes, he had big hits, but to be honest, if the comparative mediocrity of YATQ is to be his last word, then his solo career will not in future be regarded as especially successful musically outside the hardcore few. 'Your Arsenal' and 'Vauxhall and I' remain brilliant, as does half of 'Viva Hate' and, of course, a number of stray singles and b-sides. But stacked up against that you have several dubious compilations, Kill Uncle, Maladjusted, Southpaw Grammer and the (IMO) slightly average YATQ. That's half of his solo career. The point is, he still has more to give, I feel, especially if he wants to be remembered as an artist whose solo career was more than just two excellent albums and four average to poor ones. Remember that history will not judge him on his b-sides as we often do.

    2. There are many, many respected veteran artists - and I mean respected by the young too. Age need not compute with humiliation. Of course, in some people's eyes, he'll be past it, but who cares about them? I remember about six years ago a group of us, who were then 19/20, were talking in awe about BB King - and he was 60 something even then. Point is, Morrissey's catalogue is formidable - he already has the basis for this respect by means of the brilliance of The Smiths and his early solo work. Everyone laughs at the Stones, but at the same time every young person I know who's into rock/indie respects Keith Richards - why, because he's Keith fucking Richards. But more importantly, there are artists whose MUSIC remains respected in their old(er) age - Dylan, the late, great Cash, Nick Cave, the late Ray Charles, BB King, Leonard Cohen ('Dear Heather', his latest, is an album of the year and no mistake) the late John Lee Hooker, Solomon Burke, etc, etc. Point is, age need not mean you become an outmoded laughing stock. My mates when they were 18 - those who considered themselves to be "into" music would always respect those people listed above. Morrissey can achieve this, he has taste and style. Moreover, he makes the kind of music to sustain his career for far longer. 'Vauxhall' is the kind of record he could have made in his 30s, as he did, or in his 50s - there's little on there that is time specific, which is why it will continue to remain superb and viable. Someone like Tony Hadley is laughed at because he trades in on past glories, sings his old (not very good) songs and tries to behave like he was still that age. But Moz knows better than that.

Now, obviously, it's up to Moz - if he wants to quit, it can't be stopped. But really, touring aside (and he need not do this) there's no reason for it. Why can't Morrissey enlighten us about the experience of getting older with the same wit and pathos with which he approaches other subjects - after all, we're all gonna get older with him. He can have gravitas, like Johnny Cash. I bought 'American III, Solitary Man' three years ago, when I was 23. I was utterly fucking blown away by JC's covers of 'The Mercy Seat' and 'I See A Da

I also have it from good authority that Morrissey has told his management that he is not going to work with Mike Joyce. And a little bird told me that there is to be no co-operation between Morrissey and Craig Gannon. (but dont quote me on that!

  • Whatever cryptic retirement messages he is coming out with in the States...well I reckon its 'cos he is touring the East Coast, you read the reviews about passive audiences and its hardly surprising..that he will not be playing the East Coast again.Although if Chloe Sevigny got up on stage I would!
Morrissey needs to feel the love, as Darius would put it, and in seating venues where it seems the hardcore are not at the front he ain't getting it.

He won't retire from touring, just be more selective in the areas and venues he plays..such as LA and South California and obviously the UK.
I cannot imagine him stopping playing shows in regions where his fans are, whilst not crazy, are imbued with a certain fanaticism towards him.

I also doubt whether Sanctuary would have allowed him to sign a one album deal... if he breaks his contract (which I doubt he will considering the relative success of YATQ) then expect more live dates to cover the court costs!

So in conclusion he may stop touring, but not playing live dates. He certainly won't retire from music as its in his blood and he may even make another Queen Is Dead, with Johnny, Andy and Mike. And pigs may fly.

Bluebirds.... (Come on the Welsh, come on! We can do it. Rooney is just a kid!)

  • I don't think it will happen. When Morrissey and Marr first met it was love at first sight and very intense. Morrissey's world was torn apart when Johnny left, and I don't think he has ever got over it. Marr is a typical happy go lucky feller and I think he feels a bit embarrased about the whole 'affair'. He is essentially a simple married man and he doesn't want all the emotional baggage that comes with being close to Morrissey. I think that Morrissey was truly in love with Johnny. FIRSTODIE

  • I don't think anyone believes there will ever be a full Smiths reunion ... too much animosity between the group. Now what of a Morrissey & Marr reunion? I can't imagine them getting together to record -- they're smarter than that -- why tarnish their near flawless image (as the Smiths)? What I could possibly fathom is a Morrissey & Marr live appearance to perform a Smiths song or two at some charity event or Chrissie Hynde birthday or something lalong those lines. I can't even fathom anything beyond that.
