An inside look at singer's 3 a.m. soul - Tom McRae interview - The Boston Globe

Excerpt:

In its description of your music, the BBC said, "Not since Morrissey's heyday has a singer made abject despair sound quite so appealing." Do you see yourself on par with Morrissey either lyrically or emotionally?

I don't, actually. I was never the biggest Smiths fan. I can appreciate what he does, but a lot of people who are credited as being great lyricists often don't look at the words outside of the music. Oftentimes Morrissey tends to draw too much attention to the lyrics almost at the expense of the song. I don't see songwriting as putting poetry to music. It's very much an organic process of trying to combine the two and use the words to bring out something in the music. Having said that, I'm a miserable bastard, too, so I guess me and him share the same outlook on a lot of things. He wrote a lot of angry songs without getting shouty and aggressive -- he would use melody and sarcasm. I think those are much more effective weapons in music than just pure aggression.
