Gallagher: I'm a pop star - Ireland Online

01/07/2004 - 12:49:21

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher wants his band to be called a "pop group" - because he is sick of the "indie" label.

Despite initially signing to an independent record company, Creation, in 1993, Gallagher insists the band have severed their indie roots - and share more in common with pop.

The singer says, "I love pop music. That's what we do. We're not an indie band. What's an indie band? To me that's the Inspiral Carpets or Echobelly. Forget that.

"What's the point of not putting out a great single every few months? That's what The Smiths used to do and it was an event."

  • Well that sums it up really. Oasis were always there for the moron. 'Indie' for people that didn't actually like indie.

And yes, The Inspiral Carpets were (are?) indie and unlike your shitty band actually wrote decent music and had something to say.

    Miaw!

    Did I mention I don't like Oasis?

  • What "indie" label? Since when is Oasis considered indie, they are as mainstream as any big rock group. Even if they signed to an indie label, they are still widely distributed through partnerships with a major and you can't become a big major label band and then go back to indie status and expect to lose your baggage. The only label Oasis has is "irrelevant" as far as I'm concerned.

  • If only Oasis could be half the band Echobelly has become.

  • think what you want of their personalities [which as far as im concerned are fookin brilliant for rock stars] but you cannot deny the quality of the majority of their catalogue includding such gems as Definitely Maybe and [What's The Story?] Morning Glory. juste face it- Oasis rock.

  • ...used to be a roadie for the Inspirals in the late 80s, early 90s.

  • Echobelly and Inspiral Carpets were typical under-achieving indie bands altho they had a couple of half-decent songs.
I'd love more people to realise that The Smiths were a fantastic pop group who loved being in the charts and wanted to be as popular as possible unlike the likes of the Tindersticks and Bell&Sebastian who seem to revel in their obscurity.
Am I the only Smiths fan on planet earth who also loves Abba (in a non-ironic way!) and has all their studio albums?

  • (Somewhat fesicious): At least Liam's setting boundaries for the neverending "Genre Debate."

Logistics might make it difficult to release a single here and there, although I think McGee (of Creation) once suggested (the accent got me in the interview) digital encoding of downloaded data so it could only be listened to a preset number of listens.
But yes, for artists who are more prolific and/or lacking an affiliation w/the corporate world, it would be cool.

(For the record, I feel that Oasis are like the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus - one reaches a point where they smile politely and nod when people speak of them, but when asked what one thinks, simply says, "I don't (think of Oasis)." The following passage is stupid, and anything but 'insightful.' It's inflammatory and immature.)

"Well that sums it up really. Oasis were always there for the moron. 'Indie' for people that didn't actually like indie.
