I've just seen on "The Void" (UK Channel 4 Teletext music pages, page 353) that Morrissey has won the "Icon" award from Mojo magazine; kinda like a lifetime achievement thing. It was given him by Noel Gallagher, who repeated the old story about Moz asking him to go shoplifting with him. Morrissey briefly thanked "Sir Noel" before departing. --- Photo of Morrissey at the awards posted by speed on the general discussion board. But - and I do hate to add water to the torrent of negativity and cinicism than can occasionally flood this good site - but are Mojo not responcible for a bit of bandwagon jumping?
It's great that these deserved awards are being heaped on him but they wouldn't have awarded him a McDonalds Gold Star two years ago when nobody wanted to know about Morrissey.
This award is for his lifetimes's work and, good though it is, YATQ didn't swing it for him. No-one was sat in the Mojo office in 1999 thinking 'well, he's done so much, and was in The Smiths.... If only he'd release an album nearly as good as Your Arsenal but not quite as good as Vauxhall we'd probably give him a lifetime achievment award. But we can't at the moment because we might look silly.'
Still, just me being a cinic. Great news really.
