NME reports:

MOZ SAYS BURGER OFF! - NME, Mar. 25, 2004

MORRISSEY has banned all hotdog and burger stalls from his highly anticipated comeback show in May.

The singer has demanded that there be no meat vendors when he plays Manchester's MEN Arena on May 22.

According to The Sun, Morrissey said: "It would be hypocritical to sing 'Meat Is Murder' amid smells of hamburgers."

As previously reported on NME.COM, Morrissey is to play a five night residency in LA.

The star, who releases his long-awaited new album ’You Are The Quarry' on May 17, will play at the Wiltern theatre on April 22, 23, 24, 26 and 27.

  • Considering Meat is Murder is almost always played live, should Morrissey consider retiring it and make way to less played songs?

  • Oh no! It was great to hear it back in 99 and OK to hear it again in 02 but there are so many better Smiths songs that he hasn't played live for yonks, if at all.

  • Eating flesh is disgusting and I applaud when waves of mad cow disease strike at random. Well deserved. If you were dining on the body parts of my relatives who had been brutally tortured I would wish the same. When will humans evolve and progress? Not while they are playing vampire to every other species on the planet.
Sad sad sad. I ate dead animal flesh for many years and going vegan was the best choice of my life (outside of my wife). If you are too selfish to try it for the weaponless animals (because if they had opposable thumbs and some arms you would not torture and kill them so easily)then try it for your own health. Moving to a vegan diet cuts your risk of cancer by 37% and your risk of heart disease by 68%. These are factual numbers and heart disease is the #1 killer in the US. So eat a dead pigs ribs or cows abdomen and die or eat tons of delicious and healthy vegan choices and have a better chance of living the full legnth of this gift. What do you have to lose by at least attempting it? I did twice before it became my way of life.
I had seldom really felt joy in my life and could never understand why. Now I know why. I am so very gracious that Morrissey was one of the first people to make me think about it.

  • How much are the nme kissing Moz's arse right now?! It's hilarious!

All this does suggest that the album itself will get a good rating when they review it which would have been unheard of two years ago.

Has there ever been such an editorial U-turn by any music publication? All that remains for them to do is offer him an official apology.
  • There is a McDonalds within the Arena... I wonder if he will get that closed? I very much doubt it. You're fighting a losing battle here Moz I think.

Was The Brixton Academy the only venue on the 2002 tour where they sold hamburgers and fried hot dogs from a hot plate while his Lordship was on stage singing 'Meat Is Murder'?

  • My final take on this subject is: Just don't ban the beer! Then we'd have a problem. When I go to concerts, that last thing on my mind is getting a burger or hotdog or popcorn or anything else....just a few drinks and a great show. Let's not let Morrissey's little obsession with meat upset us. As least he is passionate about his cause, but it should have no bearing on the event itself. Enjoy the show.

  • I don't understand people who don't like to eat meat. It's such a natural thing to do (don't you find?) Human race has always been eating meat. Lions do it, why can't we?

And all the things people do is 100% natural. Like driving a car or talking to mobile phone.

If something is natural (like killing) that doesn't mean it's a ok thing to do, and if something is unnatural(like buing a Morrissey CD) that doesn't mean it's immoral.

You're right it is natural for lions to eat meat, which is why they have claws and sharp teeth for killing the prey and tearing it apart. Humans' anatomy is much more like that of a herbivore. Furthermore, we have the mental and moral capacity to recognize other cruelty-free sources of food, which is something lions and other carnivores don't possess. Unfortuantely, rather than using this gift of higher intelligence as a means of creating a better and more compassionate world, we create these torturous slaghterhouses and factory farms simply because a hamburger tastes good.

I'm not trying to preach a perfectly righeous lifestyle or anything, I'm just saying...
