Post by Bartok on Burned Downed Days discussion board

This link should take you to a thread on a Psychedelic Furs fansite (Burned Downed Days). It was, apparently, started by Furs mainman Richard Butler himself (he always posts under "Bartok", though has more than just 3 posts to his name....) Check out the sad knee-trembling responses (except for mine). Who needs a Smiths revival anyway? And like it's really gonna happen...... Why would Mozz piss away his newfound status? No chance. The only good thing about bands reforming: the Psychedelic Furs themselves! Currently in violently great form. Superb.

Excerpt from the post:
"I don't know it'll happen for a fact but one of the KROQ. people told me that the Smiths are performing at next years festival.....................with Billy Idol also slated."

  • I hope this never happens. When we do things out of nostalgia, it just seems to fuck everything up, and who wants that? Think about Guns and Roses, The Misfits, and The Supremes. Perhaps the only band that accomplished a succesful reunion was the Sex Pistols. It worked because, although it was profit motivated (Johnny said it himself), they stuck to their old material, had all the original members, and did not tour extensively. I suppose that would be the only way this would work. But why? What needed to be done was done. If anything,I just hope they can someday get along.

  • This is total bullshit and will never happen. KROQ is a sham and that inland invasion malarkey was uncalled for.

People who want the Smiths to reform are afraid of the present and future and only take comfort in the tried and true past.

Give it up - there will never be a reunion and there shouldn't be. The Smiths is dead and the past is where they belong. Just be thankful they even existed. It's better to have loved than to have never loved at all.

I'm guessing if the Smiths were to reform they'd either do it at a bigger venue, or maybe do it at a show where it was JUST a Smiths reunion thing... not a smiths reformation + other 80's people... that would be silly.

  • After all these years of dreaming and wishing to see The Smiths live again... This is just too good to be true and too late for my teen angst. After many years of restless nights and endless clubbing looking for "people who are young and alive" has ended in marriage and a daughter. My love for The Smiths has not waned but only grown and already I see their strong influence in today's youth. I now and then walk into a record store only to find a teenager fingering The Smiths CDs so I know music will last though... My little one is already grooving and moving to Johnny's riffs. SO in short.. "Thank you, but NO..." Let The Smiths forever live on as young carefree souls. I can hardly imagine Morrissey rolling around on the ground singing "Am I Still Ill..." He's too old and mature for that type of nonesense. Peace,

  • The truth of the matter is that Morrissey and the band will begin recording the new album under the watchful eye of Jerry Finn in October. This will take place in the States somewhere. Recording should be completed by the end of the month or early November at the latest. The album itself should see the light of day early in 2004. There is the slight possibility of a single prior to the New Year but don't hold your breath. A tour will follow, most likely in the Spring.

Now, with all of that going on when exactly will The S****s have the time to get back 'round the fire and plan their comeback?

This is absolutely ridiculous. Why do people send in these nonsense stories? Is it purely to elicit the kind of responses that I am giving? How curious.

The S****s reunion? "The S****s might get back together...but not with me." (Morrissey, Janice Long Show)

I don't think we will have a Smiths reunion for all the reasons mentioned in the posts here today. Most reunion bands are just cashing in on reunion factor (especially if there solo careers are not producing returns) I don't think Morrissey or Marr are ready to hang there heads in shame and cower to the greed factor of the states in that way. (yet) But a song together for shock value, even if not a Smiths song might be something they pull off one day.

1- The band members have occasionally answered questions about a reunion equivocally or positively.

2- Stranger things have happened, irreconcilable differences have been reconciled, people get remarried to each other.

3- Almost all Smiths fans want it so bad.

  • I really don't think this will happen...certainly not next year, anyway. I mean, can you imagine a group spilt as acrimonious as that of the Smiths resulting in a reunion at this point? Maybe when they need to raise money for a good nursing home, but not anytime soon...which I think is great. I don't want them to reform and I don't understand why anyone would. They wouldn't be able to recpature the magic - they were a product of their time and that's how they should be remembered. They've moved on and I think certain fans should too.
I've posted on here before saying how sad and pathetic some Morrissey fans sound and have gotten a lot of abuse for it, but I stand by that. I'm a huge Morrissey fan and I visit this site regularly, although my posts have become less frequent. But, to be honest, I sometimes feel a little embarassed saying that I'm a Morrissey fan. Nothing to do with him or his music, you understand, but it's the reputation his fans have for being obsessive, well, losers. I understand that he generates a form of idolatry that's incredibly rare, but I just wish some of you guys would get a grip. The Smiths...they are probably my favourite band of all time...but they've split up now. They no longer exist. Look forward to Morrissey's music new album, go crazy when you see him live, but for the love of God, get some perspective.

Oh, and using Morrissey lyrics to make a point for yourself is laughably sad. Please - stop doing this.

  • the one thing that really bugs the s**t out of me when these type of rumors come out or when i hear morrissey "fans" wish out loud for a smiths reunion, is the fact that boz and alain (with special mention to both spencer and gary)have been far more loyal to morrissey than johnny, andy, or mike ever were. do the math. the smiths were together for no more than 6 years (approx. '82-'87)while morrissey and the lads have been together for about 12 years! (91 tour-present day) AND unlike the smiths days, boz and alain have been co-writing practically every song since 'your arsenal.' all i ask is that you give these guys the respect they have earned and stop trying to get bastards like mike joyce (recent lawsuit against moz), andy (heroin addict, fired by moz), and marr (talked shit about moz in the smiths bio)more credit than they deserve. peace out

Morrissey and Joyce Michael hate each other.
Marr doesn't much like Moz but dislikes the other Smiths even more. Moz has a new solo deal. A Smiths reunion is more unlikely now than it has ever been.
Are we this desperate for news? Come on! Moz begins recording a new album within just a few weeks. Let's wait for some proper news, please.

  • It will be as "Morrissey & Marr" (and yes, Morrissey would get top billing, or he wouldn't play - believe me), and not as "The Smiths." Much the same way Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin reunited for an MTV special as "Page & Plant," and not as Led Zeppelin.
And would this in any way marr (sorry Johnny) their legacy? Abso-f**king-lutely not. In fact, it would be a welcome gesture on Morrissey's part - let's face it: the man is a stone cold self absorbed arse hole, and he's rarely done anything generous for his fans.. so him agreeing to this would definitely be an unusually nice move on his part. The reunion between Morrissey & Marr would be a historic one, capping an illustrious, wonderful history.. and if it were done in LA - one of the last true bastions of dedicated Smithdom.. it would be ..well.. utterly magical. How amazing would it be to hear the opening riff to Bigmouth or What Difference Does It Make.. knowing Johnny is playing it.. and Moz is beside him holding the mic...
It's wishful thinking, to be sure.. but that would never stop me from holding on to that wish..
Perhaps we all need to pitch in and call the "Make-A-Wish-Foundation," ay?

  • I love the Smiths as much as everybody else here, however a reformation would take away everything that was special from the band. Between 1982-1987, and in keeping the contract issues aside, The Smiths created wonderful music together. Songs that changed lives, and continue to influence countless artists around the world. Morrissey and Marr WROTE timeless pieces of art together, but now they have strayed from each other. The Smiths are no more, except for what is in our hearts. And they should stay there. In my opinion, a true Smiths fan would follow the lads' current ventures, ala Rourke&Joyce doing the rhythm fill in thing, Marr with Boomslang, and Mozzers new material. That is true loyalty. All four members are on so many different paths in life, and in many ways, I doubt they would be thrilled to death to see each other. Keep holy the past, and viva what the future holds. This is the true message of the Smiths, the music, not the members. And if it's all about the Smiths' music, let it stay in your car or living room, where it belongs.

Gaz, Spencer, Moz, and Marr...that would be a pretty amazing lineup. No offence to Boz and Alain of course...I'd actually like to hear Marr play some of their best work. Their fretwork may not be as complex, but the quality of the Lads' best songs are just as good as Marr's...although there may be less of them. Sorry naysayers.

  • I think everybody who is dismissing Joyce & Rourke as unimportant elements of The Smiths are greatly missing the point. The Smiths were a BAND, they weren't Morrissey & Marr & session musicians. I'm quite sure that Joyce & Rourke were given free rein to give any suggestions creatively & I'm sure that they both did. To dismiss them as nothing but mere session musicians is extremely harsh & very unfair. I can only presume that the people who do dismiss them have never been in a band & just don't understand how different personalities & different playing styles greatly change the dynamic in any band. Joyce & Rourke were there pretty much from the beginning, they did all the tours, they played on all the records, they were a part of The Smiths.
The Smiths would have sounded quite different if Morrissey & Marr had had different session musicians on each of the Smiths albums. There would have been no character to the sound. The band ethic was extremely important to Morrissey & Marr during The Smiths.
