will he play any Smiths?

Excerpt:

Johnny Marr is ready to do a little musical healing next year. The former Smiths guitarist has formed his own band - the first he's led since exiting the Smiths 15 years ago - and is set to take the show on the road.

Dates for Johnny Marr & The Healers start January 15 in New Jersey and stick to North American clubs through February 3 with newbie Mellowdrone opening. Then, from February 8-23, the band supports Pearl Jam on their Australian leg.

I got a newsletter with news that pre-sale details will be available at the new official Johnny Marr website to be launched after Thanksgiving.

  • I'm lucky enough to have heard an advance copy of The healers Lp - Boomslang - and it's really good. Obviously very different to what Moz is doing, a lot rockier and the lyrics/singing aren't amazing, but musically there are some great tracks on it. "Down On The Corner" has a beautiful melody, almost Smithsy, and "Need It" (which was on the "Last Ride" single from 2001) is a bit like "Nowhere Fast" (well it sounds like a train and has harmonica!).

Just great to hear Johnny back again, and I tell you what, musically (but not lyrically) it's much stronger than the likes of "I Like You", "Crashing Bores" etc and is a reminder of just how much we miss Marr.

    still the same great flavor
  • altough it´s good to see mister Marr break up the silence, and launch a new album that´s not connected with George Michael or Bernard summer, i think that "Down on The Corner" is a good song, but not different of the zilion bands that exist in today music industry!!! don´t get me wrong, it´s a good song, but Marr has much more in him than this!! I will buy the album, but it´s just like Better Than Ezra, Semisonic, Primal Scream, etc... (Those are great bands, but not even close of The Smiths or Morrissey solo himself!!)

  • good but not great. It does sound like everything else out there. Marr's voice is decent but not good enough that I see to carry a whole album. Musically, "Down on the corner" is refreshing, but the lyrics just plain suck (which is about what I expected).

Hearing this song and that Marr has a solo album just plain makes me sad. Marr and Morrissey were meant for each other ho matter what they say now. Both, through there own stubborness, have cheated us out of alot of great music. Sure they make good music on there own, but there full potential is only realized with each other.

I will probably buy the Marr and the Healers album out of curiousity and then listen to it ten times and place it on the shelf to collect dust.

    Sad, Sad, Sad, I am..................

Morrissey and the Detroit Lions! A match made in heaven!
  • not to bash johnny but i heard this album as well and it really sucks. i much would have had him play with beck ? does he still do that? anyways johnny wake up man you aren't what you were. and for all of you that think it's better than morrissey's solo stuff, i'd take i like you over any of these horific marr songs, anyday, anyday, anyday !!!

  • I listened to the mp3 available on the site and personally I preferred "The Last Ride" to the new one, however, that's not to say I thought either of them were particularly good.

I don't understand why he's making songs that sound like Oasis's reject tracks. I mean, compare this, musically, to T.F.O.T.G.T.D. and it absolutely pales, and yet Johnny Marr is supposedly a musical genius and ace guitarist. He would do better to bring in a lyricist/vocalist and just concentrate on playing the guitar and maybe show the world what a good guitarist he really is. Then maybe the Healers could become the next Led Zeppelin, perhaps.

  • Is there any slight possibility of a chance that there will be any European tour?
BTW - that new song is really good but if the whole album is similar then we have to wait for another landmark in the history of music a bit longer.
