Hey there, i just wanted to let all my fellow Moz fans know about the newest record I just bought, a single to be more specific, entitled, "By The Sword" by a young female singer/violinist/pianist by the name of Emilie Autumn. When I bought the single online, I had no idea that it contained a QuickTime movie of Emilie performing The Smiths' "I Know It's Over" live. The version, acoustic, and alone singing at the piano, is in my opinion magnificent, and I would encourage any Smiths/Morrissey fan to give it a listen, as heretofor I would never have imagined a female voice taking such command of this song, and playing it with such sarcastic sorrow.

I also have a friend in Chicago who has seen Emilie Autumn live in concert, and he relates that she does a wicked version of "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out." I'll be waiting to catch that.

Thanks for your time, and you can buy the single here:

  • Oh my holy god, she is amazing! Emilie Autumn..... Where the hell have I been not to have heard of her??? Don't answer that.....

  • I'm sorry. That was awful. She has some nice points but all in all -- not good! I hate when other people butcher the songs I love. :(

  • I for one can understand someone's reactions to hearing another artist perform a song they are close to and have long heard another way,
    BUT
I'm sitting here with a whole bunch of my friends who have just downloaded the IKIO vid, and the unanymous opinion is that this is an amazing rendition of the song. I personally think it's near genius, my best bud was nearly in tears (shhh), and so on. And my god, it's a live performance! Anyhow, we're super grateful to the folks at morrissey-solo for letting us know about this download.

  • This has got to be the most horrendously appalling version of any Smiths song ever. Are you people for real?????This is my favourite Smiths song,so I downloaded it and it took me over an hour, but what the fuck,my theory is that the greatest songs cannot be sufficiently mauled enough but that their qualities shine through.WRONG!!!!
I have heard some excruating versions of songs classical and popular, but never have I heard such a travesty.
O mother,I can definitely feel the soil cascading upon my head.
My favourite song destroyed in a Karaoke bar.
Her keyboard skills are great, but the vocals...
    Mamma Mia,Madre de Dio,Holy Mary,Ar Mhaithir.
    Urrrrrrr.....

  • She knew the words and the chords, and I am sure she loves The Smiths, but this was not the best. That song is kind of like the National Anthem--very difficult to sing because of the wide range, and one has to have almost the same break in their range as Morrissey does--she doesn't...

  • Jeff Buckley carried it off, his cover of 'I know its over' is rather lovely, it's on most mp3 downloading sites and on the official live album released after his death, 'Mystery White Boy' I think its called.

  • while there is nothing great or terrible in my opinion about this version, having not heard this song in so long this was a nice reminder what a remarkable song this is.

  • Its like she is trying to sound artsy and emotional. It could be that she sounds bad as the result of the high compression of the quicktime mov. To me, it sounds like she doesn't quite hit the notes that she really needs to hit sometimes. Her performance seems weak and unorganized. I'd rather listen to Tori any day of week.

  • No offence dude, but we have people like this by the truckloads here in the north-western hemisphere. We call them - for want of a better name - sympho-rock. Usually, a band of totally non-descript guys fronted by a pre-Raphaelite wannabe girl in long-flowing frocks. She's also often seen waving her arms around like a gothgirl from 1985, singing in a high-pitched sonority that only hounds can hear. Want me to go on? I shan't. I'm sure our Emilie is good but, jeez, do something about that darkling image, girl!!
