I just pulled this off of Allstar Music News (Feb. 4) :

Cool Band Alert: Ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr is having some success with Haven, the latest musical finding he's produced. "Say Something," the first single from Between the Senses, released Feb. 4 on Radiate/Virgin U.K., is starting to get U.S. airplay on the likes of Carson Daly's radio show, Out of the Box. Of course, the Brits are all over this Manchester foursome, with NME calling Haven "one of the best bands in the U.K." Haven kicks off a U.K. tour on Saturday (Feb. 9) at the Manchester Night and Day Tour Party. The album is expected in the U.S. by June, with a West Coast tour likely in May. Speaking of Marr, he's this close to signing a new deal with a U.S. label for the release of the Healers's long-awaited debut album. Marr is due in L.A. shortly for the final stages of mixing, and plans to hit the road in the U.S. sometime this summer. More details to come. (Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna)

  • I've not been overly impressed with Marr's output post-Smiths, but am quite happy to see that he's seemingly doing well and edging towards a deal. Good for him.

As for him signing a deal before Morrissey...

Well, let me just say that I'd expect to hear some new material by Elvis before hearing a newly released Morrissey disc!

  • Marr in LA soon?

maybe he'll just turn up at Morrissey's house, knock on his door and insist that they collaborate! (stop me if you think you've heard this one before)

  • ...and I guess the tour Morrissey's been talking about is the same tour that Johnny Marr does. There we have our Smiths reunion. Yaaaaawn....

  • How can Marr get a recording contract for his inferior work, and Morrissey be left behind? Have you heard Marr's singing? pitiful!

  • Even Johnny's band (whose single "Last Ride" adds new levels of intensity to the word "godawful") is about to get a deal.
Maybe sheer competition will make Morrissey finally do something now.

  • Carson Daly and The Smiths have been mentioned in the same paragraph. Excuse me, I'm going to be sick.

It's a little unkind to state that Marr's work since the Smiths has all been below-par. At least he's kept moving forward. He plays on 9 tracks from the new Pet Shop Boys album called, 'Release' and some of his rifts are back to the good 'old days!

  • Marr gets a record deal and Moz does not? The record industry is run by idiots

  • Will Haven be as good as The Strokes? I doubt it. Johnny Marr is one of the best guitarists ever, but he really should stick to what he knows and play Smiths-like songs instead of Oasis crap. He could even copy the Strokes if he likes, but no more funk crap or Oasis junk.

On another note, I saw Courtney the other day and she's starting her own record label. Maybe Morrissey can sign with her? If he's nice enough to her, and I know she wants him to be his friend, maybe he'll get signed. Would be cool if he even got an opening gig.

  • Fair enough (Score:2, Interesting)

My guess for the reason why Marr gets a deal sooner than Morrissey - he isn't overtaxing his value so much by expecting to be signed by a major label for a multi-million dollar advance. That seems to be the problem with Moz.

While of course he means the world to us, this isn't necessarily the case with the sad responsible rat pack of the music industry. Let's face it, if he'd been a bit more modest he could have signed a dozen record deals by now. Not only that, he could have founded his own label if he could only be bothered.
