Found this review of "The Best of Morrissey" from the LA Weekly (January 25 - 31, 2002 issue):

This latest compilation won’t do much for hardcore Morrissey fans, who say they’d rather wait for new material (yet they’ll hurl themselves onto a stage to get Moz to do just one song from his old band, the Smiths). But it’s a good way for others to revel in his glory years — especially since he’s been relegated to radio’s ’80s flashbacks, where all you hear is that blasted “How Soon Is Now” — and catch up with his most memorable solo songs. That’s 21 different ways the man can bitch ’n’ whine!
...

Merciless on “The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get,” heartless on “Suedehead” and just plain mean on “We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful,” Morrissey inhabits a cheerless world, and the darker the better. “November Spawned a Monster,” a bizarre sympathy song for a disabled girl, is the creepiest, with the help of Mary Margaret O’Hara wailing in tongues. He is capable of lighter moments, though: You can picture him in a Caesar’s lounge crooning, “Because everything that you said rings true uh ho ho uh ho ho” on “The Last of the Famous International Playboys,” his cheeky ode to England’s brotherly crime duo the Krays. Of course, there’ll be a breaking point when you wish he’d take his gladiolas and shove ’em. So much energy can be exhausted figuring out whether his target is personal, fictional or national (as in his Englishness), it’s sometimes best to let longtime backups Boz Boorer, Alain Whyte and Spencer James Cobrin do the talking, as on the raucous “Tomorrow” from ’29’s excellent Mick Ronson–produced Your Arsenal.

Then there’s a gem like “Everyday Is Like Sunday.” Even as Morrissey reminisces about a dull seaside town that should’ve been destroyed in a nuclear war, the gentleness and humility in his voice, coupled with a breathtaking orchestra, strip all the pomposity and pontification and make the song go down like a warm elixir. It harks back to the Smiths’ “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out,” a time when clutching some flowers, waving a lighter and shedding a tear felt beautifully religious. (Siran Babayan)

Morrissey's image has been yet again tarnished by an uninformed, biased, unintelligent journalist.

    >This latest compilation won’t do much for hardcore Morrissey fans, who say they’d rather wait for new material

True. All the rest is complete rubbish.

    >(yet they’ll hurl themselves onto a stage to get Moz to do just one song from his old band, the Smiths).

Just like any fan from any group.

    >That’s 21 different ways the man can bitch ’n’ whine!

    dumb, vague, incorrect.

    >just plain mean on “We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful,”

dumb +uninformed: as everyone knows, "WHIWOFBS" is 1)self-referential (Moz complaining about how the press and his lesser peers tried to harm him) 2)ironic, not meant to be taken literally and 3)a paraphrase from a famous Gore Vidal statement.

    >Morrissey inhabits a cheerless world, and the darker the better.

    hopelessly dumb, clueless and vulgar.

    >Of course, there’ll be a breaking point when you wish he’d take his gladiolas and shove ’em.

it's gladioli or gladiola, and he got rid of them about 15 years ago.

Mr or Mrs. Babayan, I suggest you consider pursuing a career in bank accounting; the so-called review is full of misconceptions, prejudices and plain factual errors; LA Weekly readers deserve better than that.

  • This is just my opinion, but I did not particularly care for this review. The writing did not impress me; it was almost as if there wasn't even any kind of review. However, I did attempt to find it because it is about Morrissey, whether it says kind words or not. I personally think this was a mild case of lazy journalism...

"All the things you said, so meaningful, they are all, so suddenly meaningless..."
  • Is the LA weekly this broke that they cant afford decent and knowledgable reporters?

Its obvious that this person knows little about Morrissey and can't even to begin to comprehend him.
