The new issue of UNCUT magazine is a Rolling Stones special but features extensive quotes from Johnny Marr aswell as Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke. Although they're talking about the Stones, they all refer to the influence on the Smiths. It's quite informative for those interested in the Smiths though sadly nothing from Morrissey himself.

Oh, right Fred. Mick and the boys were a great, great influence on me from very early on, I must say. Really, I cringe when I contemplate what the popular musical landscape would be without their inCREDIBLY enLIGHTENING contribution. In fact, I especially enjoy sitting by the fire in my mansion, sipping a Corona (oh, yes, it's this Mexican beer, makes me feel quite masculine) with Mick's new solo MASTERpiece on the phonograph. I only play it on the phonograph because such a great work quite obviously deserves it, as opposed to being played on a CD machine. I've really grown to quite enjoy it. In fact, to be embarassingly honest, it hooked me from the first gorgeous chorus. He's become so creative in his old age, every new work is like an absolute revelation. And just don't let me start in...I mean, erm, get started on Keith. Every bridge, every verse, every chorus just speaks to me. When I was in that group in the eighties, the...erm...Smiths, I was always on about how Johnny should try harder to emulate that Stones vibe, you know? I would gently sit down next to him after a particularly disappointing "jam" and play him "Wild Horses" two or three times. That's when I saw the spark rekindle-like in his eyes, and that's how the magic of that band was created. It's all thanks to Mick and Keith really, although that's a horrible thing to say for an ex-punk!
