In this weeks Entertainment Weekly (Green Day on the cover) there was a article about how artists (Morrissey, Robert Plant, Billy Idol, and Kiss) take refuge at Sanctuary Records... In the Article also mentions that Morrissey has sold more than 188,000 units in the U.S. and a million worldwide! Live in Earl's Court is mention as well ..

Morrissey Live at Earl's Court
The more you ignore him, the more album he'll release. Look out for another studio disc by years end!!!

The recent Entertainment Weekly (February issue #806) has a two page article on Sanctuary records.

The article makes mention of a good number of its best artists, also pointing out the next top five albums they will be releasing, Morrissey's Live At Earl's Court included in that list. There is also an illustration of the Mozzer as well as two other artists under the Sanctuary label.

        • This Jerry Finn thing is a thorny one...

On the one hand, he did wonders with some of the songs. "Mexico" is a great example: half-formed in 2002, it's pure class on record. And as Suzanne pointed out, Finn didn't do a bad job. People yammer on about Blink-182, but I think the Quarry sessions sound as far from latter-day punky-pop as anything you care to name.

Having said that, I really dislike some Finn's decisions. "I Like You" practically left audiences bruised when I heard it played on the '02. Finn went and neutered it. And why programmed beats? I can't figure out what they add to a great song like "I Have Forgiven Jesus".

So, ambivalence rules my roost. What do you think?

Given the commercial success of Quarry, perhaps Morrissey will feel free to take bigger artistic risks on a follow-up album. I think most everyone will agree that Quarry's production was on the safe side -- understandably so in light of Morrissey's 6+ year absence. It's possible that (like so many other artists) Morrissey had to make something "for the people" in order to garner enough clout to create a more adventurous album next time around.

  • looks to me like morrissey and alain were lovers.. or at least involved at some level.. morrissey has always had loaded relationship with his key songwriter. he wanted them to accept him with no competition. when they did, he fell in love with them (i won't share you about johnny marr and so was billy bud), or - when it came to boz - were way in a different, lower, league of charisma.
but, when they posed competiton in the form of collaborating with other artists or just offering to change the style in a way that offended moz, he was heartbroken and decided not to fight to earn them nack, being too jealous and too full of himself.
that's why he always switched songwriters that could have overshadowed him. he learned from johnny's case not to let them be to highly applauded, in fact, he seems to have an antagonsim towards sweeping overwhelming melodies, affraid that they might overshadow his lyrics and vocals.
i am surprised irish blood survived.. maybe boz composed it? can't remember.

  • Dear Friends,

I believe Morrissey could definitely put out a studio disc this year. Don't laugh- but I would not be surprised if it were to be a CD of cover songs. Tori Amos did it, afterall. The timing is right- would you not agree?

    I could see versions of

    1. Trash or other NY Dolls songs
    2. Any song by Jobriath
    3. More "rarities"- maybe a la "World Of Morrissey" (?)

    4. Patti Smith cover (not Redondo Beach)
    5. Yes- even a Wilco cover. ("Theologians")
    6. David Bowie
    7. Elvis Presley

I could see it being a classic. There is no sarcasm, here- I am serious.

    What do you think?

    Truly,

  • This is such fabulous news!! Though Jerry Finn did a credible job with Quarry's production, I hope Moz goes with someone new -- perhaps Nigel Goodrich (Radiohead's producer)or Brian Eno or someone that could facilitate a more experimental sound. Regardless, I have a feeling the quality of the songs will be excellent. When Morrissey releases albums within close succession it's often because he is feeling highly inspired and is writing some classic songs. I know this is most unlikely, but it wouldn't it be a dream if Morrissey and Marr reunited for a song or two (or a whole album!!)....

  • If true, excellent news of course, but in order for the album to be a great one, he needs to change his personnel somewhat. First, out with Jerry Finn - undoubtedly a nice guy, with sincere intentions, but his production on Quarry was bland. Second, find some new collaborators in addition to Boz and Alain (note I didn't say dispense with them altogether!). If one looks back at Quarry, Southpaw and Maladjusted, you can see Alain and Boz are now capable of writing maybe two really great songs per record - Southpaw ('Nobody Loves Us', 'Teachers'); Maladjusted ('Trouble Loves Me', 'Ambitious Outsiders'); Quarry ('Irish Blood, English Heart', 'The First Of The Gang To Die') - SO - use the best two Whyte/Boorer compositions and supplement these with other collaborators. Who? Anyone with a bit more imagination! If Jesse can write, get writing!!! But if the album is to be more than YATQ Part II then it must not be Boz alone writing with Morrissey, or else we can look forward to an album's worth of 'Slum Mums' or, even worse IMO, 'I Am Two People'.

"You are the Quarry" was supposed to be a double album at one point. I'm definitely excited, but have to say I'm not going to believe until I see it. True friends stab you in the front.
  • Seeing as how every Tom, Dick and Julia on this site has an opinion on what Morrissey should do with his new album, may I make a few suggestions?:

    1) Dispense with the current line-up and replace them with:
    Guitar: Hank Marvin
    Guitar: Ralph McTell
Bass: Some guy who can do 'fuzz-bass'
    Spoons (not drums): Paul Perkins
    Keyboards: Rick Wakeman

    2) Lose Jerry Finn and get someone decent behind the knobs...step forward Art Garfunkel!

    3) How about a theme? People like themes. I suggest 50's night or something about flowers.

Then, and only then, will Morrissey be truly 'back' in my eyes. Of course, being the 'tempremantal artist' Moz is, he'll probably ignore my advice and follow his own artistic vision, but more fool him.
