I loved the Janice Long version, but this new version is HOT. I'm not found of the lyric change, I liked the orginal lyrics better. Seriously people, MOZ is bound to rock the charts on this one. Here's why I think so, there are so many fake MOZ fans (good charlotte and the other countless trend band fans) that will buy this record. It's rockin, and with the press that he's been recieving, he's actually got a label that's pushing him. This is a good time for MOZ and I expect some BIG things for this record as well as the man himself. VIVA LA MOZ!!!

  • Today is truly a great day.
For 6+ years I sat here and listened to people say it wouldn't happen again. I would say about 3-4 years into it was the worst. People completely gave up hope and the posts for a bit started being pointed and nasty instead of representing the true personalities here. Now today I feel like it has all been worth it. Morrissey debuted a new single today. What a great sentence to say and type. Heres to those of us that always knew he would record again and just wanted him to be able to do it on his own terms. This will be a great year for the Mozzer!!!

OK I will stop gushing now but damn it this feels like Christmas. And there is an album coming......I will need an oxygen tank.

  • OK so now I just heard it and I am even happier! I must say my only fear was his choice of producer and he pulled it off. This not only sounds fresh and brash but it has a powerful masculine intelligence to it. He breaths defiance and the music is fantastic. Yep he did it. Our major station out here in Boston WFNX has just switched formats last year to play amazing music from the crappy Nickleback junk they used to. Every day I hear the Smiths or Morrissey and they mix it in with great new bands like Interpol and Bright Eyes. It's been a hit for them so I actually see this single being a hit in the Boston and NYC markets and we all know that is where it starts ;)
Morrissey may have a hit on his hands in the middle of this dead music scene. The thing is this will be the album people won't settle to download. That could be huge.

he has got such a fantastic voice when he decides to use it...Am I just having a bad listening day here..help me out

  • Topless Tandori makes a point a few posts down that IBEH shouldn't be the first single. Absolutely.

It gives the press all the amunition they need to claim he's not moved on in sentiment from The Queen Is Dead and, -this is inevitable-, The National Front Disco.

Of COURSE the song, as with all the others, is anti-racist but as we know people are so stupid and it might open up a few old wounds.

I like the production enourmously, but the point is - this isn't going to get on the radio or TV. I'm sure Santuary allowed him to choose the single and they must have had their heads in their hands when he didn't choose I Like You or First In The Gang. In terms of theme, I Like You is a massive hit.

But HEY, times are good! I'm not moaning, it's a thumping single, I'm certain the album's going to be very special. Just for once, the traditioional 'this is my/his best album' statements pre-release might not be completely unfounded. Let's hope so.
  • Irish Stew (Score:3, Interesting)

The production gives IBEH a bit of a twist and it is an improvement on the versions we have heard live and on Janice Long. BUT 'Irish Blood, English Heart' is not a great Morrissey song. The vocal topline and overall arrangement are prosaic. I'm amazed that this has been selected as the first single. Obviously Morrissey has decided to 'have his say' and is doing so through this song, but this may prove to be a mistake.

I'm not being negative as I'm sure the forthcoming album is going to be great, and 'First of the Gang To Die' and 'Crashing Bores' are vintage Morrisey songs which I look forward to hearing. But there cannot be many artists who have so consistently got it wrong in terms of choices for singles, album tracks and b-sides and also running orders. Morrissey has been a criminal offender and it is a shame he has not been wise enough to take advice on such matters in the past. The running order of 'The Queen Is Dead' is often cited as an error on Mozza's part. In addition, most of the B-Sides to the 'Southpaw Grammar' and 'Maladjusted' singles ought to have been on those albums (eg. 'Nobody Loves Us', 'I Can Have Both') while album tracks like 'Papa Jack', 'Sorrow Will Come In the End' and 'Best Friend on the Payroll' ought to have ended up on the cutting room floor.

Fingers crossed that this doesn't happen again but with IBEH being selected as first single gives me worries.

I didnt hear this song much from the live versions, it kinda sucked in my opinion, but the production improved it a lot.
I love everything from his vocals to the guitars when the passage from the slow part to the fast part the guitars go like "waaaaa" which is great. Bass is excelent and that effect at the end of the song that im not sure how its done, i just love it as well as the bass going up up up in the end.
Who cares about the moaners, the single is here and now and theres no point in complaining. just buy it instead of moaning.

  • Great Choice... (Score:2, Interesting)

Contrary to the opinions of some, the choice of IBEH for the first single is excellent. Morrissey living in California for a while did not make him a Southern California musician. He is, and always will be, English. To release The First of the Gang To Die as a first single would be more odd than taking a few shots at the crown. I believe Morrissey's comments about the Royal Line are more relevant to his music than his comments about Hector.

Both are great songs but he needs to not present his loyal European market with a first single about California gang life. He can do that next.

This song is great and was a great choice for his first single. Hats off the Morrissey once again!!

  • Lyrically, and melody-wise, it reminds of "A Rush and a Push." Srange(ways?) because I thought that was a sound Moz had abandonded. I'm more of a solo fan than a Smiths fan, but I don't mind him dabbling with the past if it sounds as good as this.

I'm on my fourth or fifth listen right now and I am hooked. What a brilliant track. I hope the rest of the album is as good, and we aren't fobbed off with "one winner and nine fillers".

  • I discovered Morrissey when I was about 17 and it was life-changing! I love the man and his music. I've never gotten to hear a new Moz song on the radio before, let alone experience a new LP release so you can imagine that I'm quite excited to say the least. :)

The new single is fantastic, if a bit different. Moz's melody and lyrics are fantastic as always, but I dislike the production. You can really, really hear the influence of that new Blink 182 producer. Not saying that Morrissey has 'sold out' or anything... The song is a winner, I just don't like the production value. Too cookie-cutter for Morrissey, if you ask me. I still believe that Morrissey's voice sounds best over gentle, layered, smooth production. :)

Good single, and I'm very pumped for the album. Another point for the Mozzer.
