  • hey i bought that tribute album last year at Ameoba in San Francisco. and it's shite! the cover that i have is different though. to me it sounds like a bunch of kids singing in the shower. i still have mine, i can't seem to sell it or trade it in. i would only buy the tribute album with the Boo Radleys, Cinerama, Billy Bragg, Supergrass, and Trash Can Sinatras!!! titled "Smiths is dead"

I have a cd very similar to this....It's called "A Tribute To The Smiths"....by: Godfathers of Change Vol. 1. It has a few different tracks, but it has most of the tracks listed for the new one, plus a few more. I have to agree that it isn't very good. It has a purple cover. If anyone wants to know more about it, let me know.....

  • oh dear, remember the 'Smiths is Dead' album of a couple of years ago?
The Smiths songs are very rarely covered by other people with any degree of success. The royalties are always useful though....
Should pay for a new Porsche.

  • A couple of years ago, I bought the punk cover album "The world still won't listen", released by TooDamnHypeRecords and Chord Records in 1996.It contains 17 Smiths-songs and the solo-hit "The last of the famous int...." This album stinks as hell! Artists involved are Down by Law, Lament, H2O, Youth Brigade, and other **!!§§FFF***. Maybe some of you saw the stupid movie Airheads, about three headbangers who take the staff of a radiostation hostage, because they won't play the demo the guys recorded. Well, the cover of London, by Down by Law, is included on the soundtrack. It took me a while to recognise it, and I didn't even remember the song was a part of my collection. Anyway, don't buy it! The cover of the album is a new version of the one of "The world won't listen", but with two Johnny Rotten-lookalikes. So, be warned!

  • Why is Michael Stipe the Cover Star? I think I may give the SMITHS ARE DEAD album a try over this one. Unless the local college radio station here WMSE 91.7 plays some of the tracks and I like them. Otherwise I wont give it a chance especially if the bands are terrible. Has ANYBODY heard of ONE of them? By the way there is a live OCEAN BLUE version of THERE IS A LIGHT... Does anyone know if that is on any of these compilations. Thanks

most of this tribute was in fact put out on the florida label 24hour service station in an attempt to raise money for the endangered manatees here in tampa. the brightest spot of the tribute is "i know it's over" performed by rosewater elizabeth. the rest is indeed somewhat awful (with a couple exceptions). the compilation was called "godfathers of change, volume 1" and was in fact issued with a purple cover.
the punk tribute "the world still won't listen" was quite bad.
however, i must correct an earlier comment-
the version of "london" on the airheads soundtrack was performed by Anthrax, not Down by Law. the down by law version appears on "the world still won't listen".
