  • The first three singles, The More You Ignore Me, the ten singles released from YATQ onwards and All You Need Is Me (presumably single #11).

It certainly omits huge chunks of his illustrious career!

  • For starters, it's missing any hits what-so-ever from his most commercial album, Your Arsenal.

There are only a couple of his "Greatest Hits" on here. Most of this music is, presumably, what Morrissey himself would like people to hear, which is fine but call it like it is. Instead of calling it a "Greatest Hits" he should release it as "#1's in My Ideal World".

  • there's something off about this tracklisting. if it's supposed to be a career-spanning retrospective, then it has a disproportionate amount of tracks from the last few years.

if it's a salute of his more recent work, then why call it "greatest hits" only to mildly garnish it with older classics?

the album seems to have an identity issue.

  • I was expecting a little something more than this. Throwing My Arms Around Paris would have been a better choice than All You Need Is Me and I would have loved to see Ganglord here too.

Well I guess we have the album coming up later in the year to look forward to. I missed Zane Lowe tonight so didn't get to here the recorded version of the new song. Hopefully it will be put on youtube asap :)

  • The fact that Moz has called it Greatest Hits is his way of saying these are his personal hits. This title is usually used for xmas albums for people like Billy Joel, Celine Dion and other has beens. He's always making a joke at his concerts saying this went straight to number 50 and so on. Remember his comment about Boxers in Introducing Morrissey?

And I suppose it's a way of putting his latest singles on one album for his new fans that jumped on Quarry and Ringleader.

  • i don't really believe this will be the final tracklisting. IT just beleagures suspicion. I agree totally with all the posts observing the disproportionate amount of illumination given to songs purveyed from 2004-2006. And then why throw in the most obvious songs from way back when. I"d like to see "the end of the family line" . why only 15 songs comprising the entirity of the compilation? what a gyp. He may as well just release a bargain priced fusion of you are the quarry plus ringleader of the tormentors...in similar fashion that dvds are made- like the combination package of halloween 2 and 3 or something.
Morrissey really needs to evaluate his glow by circumventing actions that contradict his infinite clarity of which used to beckon his decisions far more consistently. Personally i think it started to dwindle once he started buffing up and singing in a deeper voice for most of the songs. I can't believe he's sqaundered his talent by retaining boorer/whyte and tobias- these guys are fucking hacks unless they're cowriting really good songs save for your arsenal and parts of vauxhall and i- i like vauxhall fine. i just wasn't expecting him to descend into an elevator music barrage . Get rid of that fucking band! they suck. they suck. and you suck now too because you want to play master and servant with everyone who believes in you these days. I"m sick of it. THis album is a key reflection of this unrelenting sting . What is wrong with morrissey these days- i am sick of this shit. YOu are morrissey! you're not supposed to make a bunch of mediocre songs. cos listening to this drone makes me feel so old inside. Stop being so boring . IT's cool...but change up the melody and musicality is deprived of any real innovation. IT's so ugly. the guitar tone is so fucking ghastly. I don't understand why you settle on these terribly inferior musicians- i like some of their songs..but they've exhausted their well of what they can contribute to writing with morrissey. I think at this point because of the low expectations (other than a few songs on rott and ...we wait and we're patient because people who admire morrissey know he's a singular talent- when will you resume applying your god-given talent and stop wearing stupid jewelry..and grow the hair on the top of your head out longer please. and get rid of these fucking dorks in the band. They've tarnished what could have been a stellar unprecedented immaculate ongoing succession of gifts to humanity.

  • Why no King Leer on the greatest hits ;)

I think it's a good compilation, but it lacks some of the older songs (I hate using that term here, His songs show no age whatsoever) that really pull you in on a deeper level like Now My Heart Is Full, November Spawned A Monster, or Seasick, Yet Still Docked. Not to fret, I'll still buy the album, probably more than one if released on vinyl.

I think it will be a good listen for a lot of people just getting into him, or who have heard of him from other artists liking/mentioning him. Because, of course, you can't listen only once.

  • My God! I don't believe it...I just don't believe it!! "Let Me Kiss You" and "The Youngest Was the Most Loved" all together on the same album? Morrissey is pulling out all the stops on this one!

"Redondo Beach", "First of the Gang To Die" all the same songs i've always wanted on one cd. You know, whenever I have guests over and we're drinking our tea...nothing good on the 'telly':

"Hey all, I got the new Morrissey 'Greatest Hits CD'"

    "What?"

"Yeah, it has the perennial favorites 'Everyday Is Like Sunday', 'The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get'...and of course 'Suedehead'!"

    (Expressions of amazement)

"But don't forget about his modern classics such as 'You Have Killed Me' and 'I Just Want To See the Boy Happy'. And did I already mention they included 'Suedehead'?"

Can't wait to break this one out! Am I the only one dissapointed in that they didn't include "On The Streets I Ran" or "To Me You Are a Work of Art"? And what happened to "Teenage Dad On His Estate"? No and I mean NO Greatest Hits compilation of Morrissey's is complete without that one!

It's a good thing I didn't buy "You Are The Quarry", "Ringleader of the Tormentors", nor any of their b-sides or else I would really be screwed!

  • It looks like his illustrious twenty year career at the top of music is about to come crashing down around him.

For the first time I can see a Moz release being roundly slated by the music press. No one takes kindly to being blatantly taken advantage of - and releasing a best of which is essentially only the best of the last two albums is blatantly taking advantage of fans.

Poor show, Moz. This is the first album you've ever released I won't touch.

  • I'm seeing a lot of bitching on the site about the tracklist, but I think its going to be great. When I first heard of a new "greatest hits" album, I at first cringed. There have been several noteable greatest hits from Moz and I wasn't sure what a new one would offer. Well, turns out Moz knows what he's doing. Focusing on the newer material that got left off the other greatest hits cds is the only reason to buy this one! This compiles the best of the receent years, and since those are the tracks that aren't available together yet, it will be a worthy buy! I can see how people are disappointed at the (supposed) tracklist, but go listen to "The very best of" and you will surely hear the tracks you want. As for me, I'll anxiously awaiting the newest GREATEST HITS!

  • I'm wondering if the tracks chosen were mostly selected by record company executives, and not Moz alone. Think about it... When a well-known talent is signed to a new recording contract with a new record company, let's say for five albums, they might specify that one is a "greatest hits" compilation with tracks of their choosing. That would take the selection out of the artist's hands, but means he still gets paid. The remaining four albums could be studio or live albums, or even a home video/DVD.

We don't know the details of the new Polydor/Decca deal, but it's possible that they wanted a greatest hits disc right out the gate, and made it worth his while for Moz to agree to it. What makes "Greatest Hits" odd to me is the tracklisting isn't in chronological order.....

  • Maybe he's based the decision on the top charting songs. 17 songs have been #17 or better on the UK charts, however only 13 were chosen for this compilation. Although "Interesting Drug", "November" and "We Hate It..." charted higher or equal to "In The Future...", they've been on countless compilations and live albums already, so maybe Moz wanted to leave some of those off in favour of some of the material that hasn't been compiled previously. Alma Matters also charted 16 (1 better than ITFWAW), so that's an odd one to leave out as it covers at least part of the gap between Vauxhall and YATQ. Other than those four songs being left out, the tracklist makes total sense.

  • Just how many times does Morrissey intend to try re-selling the same songs to his fans?

It got especially disgusting when that businessman Merck Merckurimerckus got his paws on Morrissey's career. How many versions of each album and single did he have put out there? Sadly, one has to come to realization that these two businessmen - Morrissey and Merck - view the fanbase as something to come up with ever-more shameful attempts to milk every extra penny they can out of.

I've also noticed that each time these two businessmen - Morrissey and Merck - have something to sell, Morrissey goes out into the mass media to generate a controversry and get himself in the papers, most recently the NME feud.

It is possible to put together nice compilations that may repeat some tracks but nevertheless are worthy and put out for the right reasons. This is not one of them. Not at all. Even the generic title gives that away.

OK, so yeah, he included "I just want to see the boy happy" which is not one of my favorites (the sound of the recording reminds me of the days when I used to sing into a boom box to the radio that you can hear playing softly in the background.....you can almost hear the throat gurgle noises and nose whistles because it just doesn't ring with a feeling that the entire band plus Moz were in the studio completely rocking it out with the volume at 11). But you know something? What track listing could make a group of people who already own all of the albums and CDs happy? I have ROTT, Bona Drag, etc. as do most of you guys. It's not like the good old days when I could buy "World of Morrissey" and be excited because I hadn't heard many of those songs.

There could be other reasons for it. Since Sanctuary went defunct, who knows if this release is just a means of offering those songs as their only "in print" version?

I think most people are mistakenly greeting this with the expectation you would feel if this is a new release.

  • Look Look at you -- look at you “so called” fans, I’ve never seen such a display of human pigs. You sit here and whine and cry like little girls about Morrissey’s choice of songs. This is a “Greatest Hits” -- do you know what Greatest Hits means? Why don’t you take your magic wand and bibbidie bobbideee boo -- presto 17 new songs. No matter what he does, you people devise ways to sling mud at him.

I remember when he canceled his shows in several places this summer and the same old cast of characters by the hundreds came out ranting and accusing him of not keeping his commitment; interestingly none of you came out from the woodwork like swarms of termites that you are to acknowledge that he did indeed keep his word whereby he rescheduled all of his shows that he had to cancel when he was sick. I didn’t hear a peep and I still haven’t heard a peep regarding that scenario. None of you people sent get well cards nor did you inquire about how he was feeling ... No - you just mocked him for his alleged reputation of canceling shows and not keeping commitments. Where were you fat pigs when he rescheduled, and even went above and beyond by adding even more shows.
More importantly where were you people when he really was sick -- I’ll tell you where you were - you just crawled back under your rocks and never said you were sorry.

No wonder Morrissey is ashamed of 90% of his fans.

thats a good tracklisting offering plenty of hits as well a chronological career-spanning narrative to those unfamiliar with the Morrissey cannon.

if they wanted to cut it down to 15, id probably cut NSAM, SYL, YTOFMF, NMHIF and SRMY, keeping the two must havs from Viva Hate and then one track from each subsequent album (with a couple choice non-album singles thrown in) until YATQ and ROTT where you bump it up to 2tracks each as yure trying to court both newer fans who are more familiar with the newer material and older fans who may need more exposure to the newer material.

but no- instead of somewhere between 30-40% post-90's material, it's nearly 75% post-90's material. thats juste stupid.

    1) Irish Blood, English Heart
    2) You Have Killed Me
    3) Suedehead
    4) First of the Gang to Die
    5) Last of the Famous International Playboys
    6) Let Me Kiss You
    7) The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get

    10)Redondo Beach
    11)November Spawned A Monster
    12)Youngest Was The Most Loved

  • Are you kidding? "I just want to see the boy happy" & "The youngest was the most loved" in a greatest hits collection! Lost & Disappointed...!?

  • I would be the first to admit this tracklisting is not all I would have hoped for in a Morrissey Greatest Hits.

However the tracklisting can be easily explained.

The bulk of the release is the Sanctuary A-Sides, including Redondo beach. This is Morrissey's most recent, (relatively) heavily promoted material from the last few years, still fresh in the minds of the record buying public. This material has also never been compiled before. Additionally, with Sanctuary's slightly distressed state, and with leasing so many tracks from them for the release, maybe they were able to get a good deal there. So to summarise - it's easy to see why they wanted to include all the Sanctuary As.

Then we have two new tracks, which is sort of the standard for Greatest Hits these days it seems, with one released as a single. Especially with an album coming up, they don't want to give away too much, but they need to have a little exclusive on there.

Then finally we have the first three singles and The More You Ignore Me. Why so few songs from the rest of his career? And why these? Well I suppose the reason they have chosen so few (I mean, a 15 track Greatest Hits from an artist with a career spanning 20 years is just RIDICULOUS) is probably for licensing reasons, they will have to pay per track, and they probably reason it's not worth it financially. If they had licensed another 5 tracks then would this have sold many more copies? Probably not *that* much more if at all. And why these tracks? They were his biggest hits, that's all. Think about it.

So yeah the tracklisting does make a total mockery of the idea of a Greatest Hits, but that said the reasoning behind it is explicable. All the cache of the 'Greatest Hits' tag with fewer of the associated costs. I just wish Decca could have had some dignity and done a 'Best Of 2004-2007' with the A sides, a couple of album tracks, a handful of Bsides and the two new songs. That at least would be a more satisfying release than what we are presented with here, which, as others have noted, is woefully unrepresentative.
