Hot from Cannes (25/05/06) ... Mark Standley and Steve Petricco are at Cannes film festival right now. For over two years now they've been making a documentary about the smiths, in close collaboration with Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke.

On Tues night Mark handed a copy of the documentary to Alan Yentob, head geezer at the bbc. Rumour is he's very impressed with the film which tells the real story of what went on behind the scenes.

Inside the Smiths will be premiering in Manchester in July. Broadcast rights and distribution rights are under negotiation currently involving MTV, Warner bros and the bbc.

I promise you, this film is fantastic.

  • Yes, this is going to be a really balanced picture of what went on.

  • Boring ramblings from Joyce and Rourke makes The Smiths documentary??!!!
We have read them all already on various UK magazines. There is nothing more left to milk from the "story". Apart from Joyce and Rourke being short a few bob....
Just fucking leave The Smiths legacy alone - there is nothing more to it apart from Marr's great guitars and Morrissey's lyrics.
    MORRISSEY WAS THE SMITHS!

The sycophants are out in force once again. Anything that doesn't involve Morrissey (peace be upon him) is simply not worth paying attention to.

Joyce, Marr and Rourke are on fairly good terms. So, I don't see why this would be a character assasination of him.

If you don't tell your story, then someone else will. So, there's no reason to get upset over Joyce and Rourke giving their side of things. They can't help it if Morrissey doesn't involve himself.

The irony is thick since if there is any Smith that has an inflated, egomaniacal view of himself, then it is Morrissey. Morrissey politely shit on the The Smiths legacy when he claimed that it was only him and Marr, which clearly was not the case.

Some of you sound like those Islamic wackos that get upset when cartoons are drawn of their prophet. Get psychiatric help immediately.

Morrissey will not send you an autographed 8x10 just for proving your devotion to him on an a internet discussion forum. Don't be a follower. It's unbecoming.

  • if morrissey and marr aren't involved in the movie then why bother? i don't want to hear mike joyce and andy rourke ramble on about the court ordeal that happened in 97'.

  • I wonder if there'll be extra bonus footage telling the story of how Joyce royally ripped off Rourke (and apparently Stephen Street & Steve Lillywhite) last year.

  • Though I don't object to Rouke and Joyce's right to tell their side of the experience that was 'The Smiths' without direct conributions from Moz and Marr you kinda instinctively feel without even having seen the movie that it really can only be at best 'half a story'.

I mean you're going into see a movie called 'Inside The Smiths' knowing that there will be no interviews with the two people that actually formed the group!!

It already feels like the time I bought 'Elvis by the Presley's' on DVD and all it basically had was Priscilla prattling on with hardly any footage of The King. Cheated!

Still I could be wrong about this film, I guess we'll soon see, but if those still shots are anything to go by I'm a little worried. Anytime you see Peter Hook or Mark E. Smith's mug featured alongside a crtique of the band you should be rather worried.

For a start, anyone interested in The Smiths will go and see this documentary, so stop bloody moaning about it. Secondly, all this slagging off of Mike Joyce is beyond the pale. Anyone who has spoken to Mike or knows him will know that even in his most unguarded moments he is nothing but kind about Morrissey and he is protective of the history of the band and very proud of what they achieved. He is a decent (veggie), honest and friendly guy. I think some of the comments left here that I have seen (particularly those threatening violence) are despicable. Some weak-minded individuals would rather believe every word Morrissey says when the fact that Mike has remained dignified, and relatively silent about the matter (court case and Morrissey's subsequent outbursts) speaks volumes about his integrity. Also, if you met Mike you would shake his hand, want his autograph and have your picture taken with him, even though you've slagged him off here. I recently heard Morrissey's 'song' 'Sorrow Will Come In The End' which appears to wish that someone will slit Mike's throat! As a father and family man who has recently been threatened with a gun I can tell you now that threats of this nature are the lowest threats a man can make. Morrissey, just bloody grow up man! And as for the minority of fans who have made stupid threats against Mike...get. a. life.

  • There seem to be two vital components missing to this film. Firstly Marr who was of course crucial to the Smiths, and then... And secondly, and more importantly, Morrissey without whom the Smiths would be, well, I'm not even sure they would be. Looks a lot of sycophantic money-making rubbish on the part of Joist and Wrought. Pah, I think I'd rather see the Da Vinci Code

  • We all know the stories about Johnny and Morrissey, so it will be nice to see Mike and Andy's perspectives. There is no doubt it will only reflect the best of the Smiths' career. They've always shown respect for the other two. True Smiths fans will appreciate this.

  • morrissey and marr wrote all the lyrics and music of the smiths.the other two played what they were told and earned an extremly good living from it.since the smiths split morrissey and marr went off and done their own thing.ie because they are two very talented individuals.the other two done whatever came their way and lived off the fact that they were once in a very remarkable band.check the photos from this forthcoming docu and you will see these two individuals smiling away and seeminigly having a good time.this would never be posible for these two had they not been in the band the smiths.had they not have been in this band they would not be in this privaliged posision now.marr is an extreamly talented guitar player, and morrissey wrote these words because it was his life and his outlook to the whole world.it wasnt just a case of,oh these words sound good.it was his world inside reluctantly presented to everyone else on the outside.it was not a choice for him to be in this position,it is the only place he could be,there was no other choice.so my point is,morrissey is an outsider in a world that will never conform and im sure he probably more often than not feels like he's on the wrong planet.this was probably the whole reason the smiths were the great success that they were.they still win so many polls and its always because of the great lyrics.never becasue of the drum roll on the queen is dead.

  • I was always wondering why Rourke and Joyce never continued playing with Morrissey during his early solo years. I know that Gannon left the band but didn't know what happened as to why Joyce and Rourke left.
