Fanatics and hypocrites... make news once again!

08:01 AM

The front page of Solo has a post calling for a boycott of the David Letterman Show. This comes from the vegan/veg fans... tugging at our heartstrings--asking us to be decent human beings. Yes, the rib ordeal was in poor taste. But, come on people! Quit pushing your bland foodie tastes upon those who have a passion for food--all foods. It seems to me that there is something really non-human about people who abstain from indulging their palates. Isn't eating one of the most wonderful pleasures to be had? But hey, if you veggies don't want to eat flesh, this is fine by me. Just don't tell me what to eat. You are not morally superior because you don't eat meat. Only if you all are perfect angels in all areas of your lives, should you preach to us imperfect people.

I hope you same folks who are so kind and gentle plan on boycotting Morrissey if he plays in Iran. A man was just stoned to death there for adultery. When Moz stated that he wanted to play Tehran--I assumed that:

A) He was joking.
B) He is ignorant to what is going on in Iran.
C) He is morally bankrupt.

Anyone who believes animals should have rights but could care less about human rights violations is missing some pieces.

I have an idea. If Moz does play Iran, I will boycott him, his music, and this site for one year.

July 10th: Update on Iranian stoning

  • I don't know what the Letterman thing is about and don't really care and haven't got much time to find out, but in relation to your aggressive attack on vegetarians like myself in general, I think your reasonings a bit weird. It's not a case of 'pushing (our) bland foodie tastes upon those who have a passion for food--all foods', but trying to prevent harm to other living creatures and causing them unnecessary suffering. Sure 'eating is one of the most wonderful pleasures to be had', I agree with you and it's no less pleasurable when your a vegetarian. Yet sex is also one of the most wonderful pleasures to be had as well, but that doesn't mean it's okay to go around raping women, does it? Having shit loads of money to buy things you enjoy is a wonderful pleasure, but that doesn't mean it's alright to wack some old lady over the head with a brick and take her share of it so you can have some extra. The problem is, in all these cases your appetite impacts on an involuntary third party and causes it death, pain or suffering, therefore to say because you like doing something is a justification for it is inclining to the psychopathic. Look at Hannibal Letcher, fictional character though he is, he enjoys eating meat, so does that mean then he should go out and indulge this appetite in the way (and using the justifications) you proscribe? They would apply similarly. Hence, I think you've got it the wrong way round and there's actually 'something non-human' about people who indulge their palettes, or other appetites, with total disregard for the suffering it inflicts on other living things. That would be most people's judgement of what is means to be 'inhuman' not the way round you have it.

Yet at any rate, it simply isn't true that vegetarian food is bland etc. I have a strong passion for food too, probably too much of one I tend to think when I look at my stomach in the mirror these days, and am pretty much a sensual debaucherer in most things, yet I've never compromised this sensuality for a moment when it comes to being a vegetarian. I never ate as good as since I became vegetarian, because you're forced to explore different cuisines from all over the world to fill the gap left by taking out meat in a typical western diet and the result, for me at any rate, is a more sensorially adventuorus diet by far.

Moreover, all this is nothing to do with silly games about feeling morally superior. I do what I do out of a feeling of affection I have for other living creatures, (it's mainly humans who tend to piss me off, Iran and the stoning you mention being a case in point) and any so called 'preaching' done is just done to try and stop their suffering, that's all. Plus, generally, I don't go around openly criticising non-vegetarians anyhow, and generally find it's the other way round as now, maybe cos the people who criticise us feel guilty somewhere deep down, I mean, if they like animals at all and dote over doggies or kittens etc they must do, and so they launch these attacks on us to try and justify themselves.

Okay can't hang around to debate more, gotta go........

  • Sorry for taking so long to add to this.

First off, yes, David Letterman has an odd sense of humor and often has ongoing fun with most of his guests, especially ones who have come back several times over the years. Plus, you are right in that Morrissey should not play in Iran. Over his career, he has made it a point to make personal stands against such governments, so that should not be different.

Secondly, I am with your original opinion. Vegetarians who constantly and continuously attempt to force their beliefs on others are not morally superior, quite the opposite in fact. Now, this does not apply to all vegetarians, but if you are a vegetarian and the statement offends you, then you must be a self-righteous bastard. It has NOTHING to do with being a vegetarian. A vegetarian replied to your post, and went off like you were initially attacking vegetarians, but you were not. You were attacking self-righteous people who try to force their will and beliefs on others. Much like that person just tried to do, so I suppose your initial post WAS towards that person, but not because they were a vegetarian. (Yes, this double-speaks a little, but it makes sense.)

Thirdly, bacon is the yummiest, most delicious, succulant, mouth-watering food there ever was that you can cook without adding any other ingredients. No other singular food that you prepare with NOTHING ELSE tastes as good. People can try to argue this all they want, but it is irrefutable. All meat-eating mammels prefer the smell, flavor, and texture of bacon over any other food. Even simpler-minded animals, like dogs and cats, will prefer cooked bacon over anything else. When you walk into a house that has bacon cooking, your mouth waters and your stomach will try to make you think you are hungry for it, even if you just ate. EVEN IF YOU JUST ATE BACON, YOU WILL NOT SAY NO TO MORE BACON!! So there, how's that for forcing my opinion on you, gentle readers, hehe.

And fourth, vegetarians who do not eat meat due to health reasons are fine. They are not preachy, they are not dinks, they do not get all uppity. Vegetarians who do not eat meat as a choice are sometimes fine, so long as they realize it is their choice, that they have that freedom to make that choice, and that everyone else is entitled to their own choices. Vegetarians that do not eat meat because of some perverted sense of "living beings" and "nature's (god's, whatever)children" need a smack. Just because you are not eating the store-packaged meat does not mean the animal will suddenly become alive, its parts wont rip out of the packages and fuse together to get up magically restored. No, it is dead, it was dead, it will be dead after you leave the store, and the fact that you refuse to eat it will not change that. More will die, more will be packaged, and if we do not eat it, then that food will go to waste. Would you rather the animal died for nothing, or would you rather it had some purpose? Oh, and btw, plants are alive, too, ya know. They get mistreated much more often, are in extremely cramped conditions from birth, and are eaten by even more people. Cattle and swine have at least SOME room to move around, but these poor vegetables are confined to even smaller and more cramped areas. They spend their lives in close quarters, being fed, not allowed to move around, and are then ripped from the earth when they reach maturity, sometimes sooner, so they can age on the way to your store, where they usually arrive banged, bruised, and broken from abuse. Yes, these poor plants are STILL ALIVE, even during the packaging process, even when you buy them at the store, even when you toss them into the stove! But do I see you "life loving" vegetarians making a fuss? Noooooooo! Oh, if it has eyes, you care, but that's it, eh?! Guess what, potatoes have eyes! ~sobs~ If you bend a greenbean, does it not break?! ~cries~ Poor defenseless corn on the cob, being ripped to shreds right in your home while it is still alive! ~anguished sob~ OH! HEAR THE CRIES OF THE CARR
