Saving Face

10:17 PM

Today Oprah broadcasted her annual My Favorite Things show. Since 1999, she has been hosting a holiday celebration whereby she spoils the audience members with her favorite things of the moment. Each lucky studio guest walks home with thousands of dollars worth of the latest and greatest gifts of the season. I have seen several of these shows throughout the last six years. Oh how I wanted to be one of the chosen ones.

Well this year, the audience members were not exactly randomly picked. Each was hand selected because they all shared one thing in common; they are all Katrina volunteers. Yep, all have sacrificed their time, money, and energy to help the victims of this horrible disaster.

Holy cow, that is well over $5,000.00 per volunteer. Such a worthy cause eh? I mean $49.99 for cookie dough to make 30 cookies. This sounds perfectly rational -- not! Oh, but best part is the last big give away: a SONY Notebook valued at $1,500.00. Think this was a PR stunt to save the company's tainted reputation after the whole DRM rootkit fiasco?!

Capitalism, Consumerism, volunteerism! Ho, ho, ho!
