site and hardware upgrade by the end of the month

10:33 AM

All my spare time in the last month has been going towards upgrading the site code. It's taking some effort because I hadn't touched the code in about 3 years, so I had a lot to catch up with. The new hardware is in place also, this server is about 5 years old and although reliable, it's time to move on. I'm targeting end of april / early may for the new code to go into place. The site will be down at least a day as I move everything over.

It's a bit ironic, about 3 years ago is when my job shifted to more website programming, so I actually have learned a huge amount since then. But doing it all day at work, coming home and working on the same thing at night wasn't attractive. Now things are a little more stable and the Morrissey news has slowed a bit, I look forward to the evenings and weekends when I can work on this site.

Most of the changes are functional, better searching, abuse prevention /administration so the new site will not look too different from the current one. The journals will be a little different, there will be more options for the comments. There will be expanded use of the 'friends' feature - 'foes' will be added too. In the journal you can allow comments from only friends, or one option is 'no foes', which also closes off comments from anonymous people.

  • Thanks David. Whether people like the changes or not...whether they like who posts or what gets posted..beyond that it's easy to take for granted all the technical work you do to keep this site running and updated. Thanks for the skills.

  • going to Isle of Wight?

i just saw the DVD. i figure that they have to have a historic Morrissey gig in the UK at least once a year until he retires.

as for "Foes"....i just say "whatever" and feel heartened that they continue to read my journal. i assume they read it out of entertainment because my life is more exciting than theirs as i'm sure i've written enough that someone could have used something against me at this point.

    I scare dead people.
  • I like those journal changes that you spoke of. I have had entire entries ruined by trolls. I love feedback, so I want to enable the comments. But some of the things that were said by anonymous posters, were so vicious. I have had to to delete whole journal entries in order to remove those comments from view. Just last week, someone who I have a sorted history with, posted my correct address in my journal. He was angry because I had mentioned his name (not his real name). In order to remove my address, I had to delete EVERYTHING. Of course he knew I would have to do this. Ultimately then, journalists have limited power over the content of their journals. I think it would be great if we had the ability to delete individual replies without having to erase the whole entry.

  • I've been accused of being a troll, but there are all sorts. And yup Morrissey if he logged in and was a bit younger, would probably be the king of trolls. Just read the letters he used to write. lol.

That said, pointless abuse and the expression of a different opinion based sometimes on personal experience, are two very different things and so I think that eliminating the posts that express the former is a good idea.
I'm anonymous because I've been annoyed by idiots, not by cowardness. :-D

I only disagree with F. when he/she says Morrissey is fearless...Lol, that was a good one!

  • Well then lucky for us that Moz didn't have a PC back in the early eighties. He may have become a message board troll instead of The Smiths' frontman.
