I'm not the man you think I am...I am a poor freezingly cold soul...I have just discovered that prudence never pays. Now, we must wait for the right time

What do we get for our trouble and pain?

SWEDEN 2 NIGERIA 1 by JacquesTheLad

With arguably the most exciting game of the group stages today (England v Argentina), Sweden were looking to given themselves a perfect opportunity for qualifying for the second phase. Nigeria, on the other hand, had to take something from the game to have any interest in the tournament.

The start was bright by both teams, moving the ball about well. Nigeria opened the scoring with a header from Aghahowa, which Sweden skipper Johan Mjallby should really have cleared. Their lead, however, was to last all of eight minutes, as Celtic's Henrik Larsson latched onto a through ball from Arsenal's Freddie Ljungberg with a wonderful first touch, before taking the ball past two more defenders and calmly poking the ball past keeper Shorunmu.

I didn't see the rest of the game, as I was on my way into work. However, Sweden won with a penalty converted by Larsson, and although Nigeria put pressure on the Swedes towards the end, they held on to take all three points and top Group F. Nigeria are out of the competition in the sense that they cannot qualify, but they could still go some way to preventing England qualifying in their final group game.

SPAIN 3 PARAGUAY 1 by JacquesTheLad

Didn't see this one as I was working, so I'll just give you the information on the goals. Paraguay took the lead on 10 minutes when Spanish defender Puyol put the ball in his own net. The South Americans led until the second half, when Real Madrid's Morientes came on as a substitute and scored two goals. Fernando Hierro secured the win with a penalty.

The result means that Spain have become the first team to qualify for the second phase, whilst it looks like Paraguay may need a win against Slovenia to progress.

ARGENTINA 0 ENGLAND 1 by JacquesTheLad

Didn't see this one either, but I'm led to believe that Argentina dominated from first whistle to last, and England were awarded a penalty for an Argentinian fan calling referee Pierluigi Collina a "nancy boy". Oh, ok, that didn't really happen...Michael Owen went down (rather easily, I must say) after a "challenge" from Pochettino, and "Captain Marvel" David Beckham put the ball jammily past Argentina goalkeeper Cabellero.

This means that England only need a draw against Nigeria to be sure of progressing to the second round, whilst it looks like Argentina must beat Sweden in their final game to go through. For the Swedes, avoiding defeat will definitely see them through. Complicated? It isn't...
