"Isolation" an original poem based on the Joy Division song of the same title
What I can do for you is as nothing.
I can only keep myself as everyone
does, though we may be the few who know
this much: this narrow attention to the self
concentrates us in perfect blindness to the world.
And our world expands with a vicious
contraction into unworldly pain: oh mother,
shame, shame, my best amounts to shame.
And shame I am, sums and limits me; mother,
you cannot know, you cannot because
though I write it, though I live before you,
though you have heard me sing, transfixed,
the word, I will keep it to myself. The pleasure
belongs to me in a perfected isolation that
gods would covet.
