In his 2014 book: "House Of Fun: The Story Of Madness", John Reed cites Morrissey:
<blockquote>
After The Smiths disintegrated in summer 1987, Morrissey had swiftly set about a solo career, teaming up with producer Stephen Street for his successful debut album Viva Hate , issued in spring 1988. After some acrimony with Street, Morrissey opted instead to recruit Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley for sessions beginning August 1989. “I was a serious Madness fan years ago,” Morrissey admitted at the time. “It was largely their sense of perverse fun I quite liked. I never considered the records to be standard pop fare. I quite liked the peculiarity. People say music hall, which I suppose is quite true.”
