He started using it as a last song on the Boxers tour. He continued using it in his Southpaw Grammar setlist, but usually closed with National Front Disco. During the Maladjusted tour he closed with Shoplifters again almost exculsively except on three occassions, on two of those he played the song elsewhere in the set, the other he played the Queen is Dead. he didn't use it once in the whole 99 tour and just brought it back to the set in Chicago last week.
My guess is that Shoplifters is a close to an anthem that Moz has, sort of like a call to his fans to still believe in the music, the believe in him. But I think the deeper reason is perhaps his final reclaiming after each show that The Smiths fans, are his fans, still.
Or it really could be just this simple, either it is requested so often he plays it to please the fans, or he may just like the song and enjoy singing it.
So many answers... which one could be true, maybe none of them; except of course the part about which tours he played it... that is true.
