San Francisco, CA (Dec. 10, 1999)

Wasn't like the old days

I flicked on the television and Comedy
Central was playing SNL shows. I watched a great one. Michael Keaton was the
host and guess who was the musical guest. Yep, our pal Steven.

This was '92. M. was better dressed , thinner and had an energy that was
totally missing in the Maritime show. At the SNL show there was something
more serious, untouchable and charismatic about him. He looked like a poet,
a priest and a screen star--wrapped in denim and wit. There was something
about him that you just couldn't know. So, you just kept staring--trying to
figure it out.

On Friday in SF there was no mystery. He was there--going through the same moves
of '92, but this time he just looked so distracted, even tired. He fouled up
a few lyrics. He folded his arms when fans climbed above the human canopy in
hopes of finding the stage and quipped with a smile,"No, you can't do that.
It's illegal." Of course a dozen or so fans did complete the pilgrimage and
got their hug before they got their bouncer..but it didn't feel very
exciting. Just something you knew was going to happen. It did. Then it was
over. You know like conjugal love.
