Deinze, Belgium (Oct. 12, 1999)

"God comes to shake hands" et cetera ...

The newspaper "Het Nieuwsblad" (which means ...the newspaper) of Oct. 14 has a review of the Deinze show. It says nothing really interesting, but the title is not bad: "God comes to shake hands".
Another newspaper "De Morgen" (meaning ... Tomorrow !) has a review called "The Angel is slowly falling". Now this one really is amazing. The journalist writes that Moz played almost nothing but new songs from the soon to be released CD !!! This idiot goes on saying that he recognized "Hairdresses of Fire" (sic) !!!
What the two articles have in common however is their complaining about the poor soundmix - which is true I guess, but this has always been a major problem with the venue- and closer to the truth that "Meat is Murder" was an incredible highlight.

My personal view is that Morrissey was in an exceptionally good mood and extremely filled with enthusiasm, but the response of the crowd could and should have been better.
When compared to the Köln show the day after, I think it was the other way around in Germany: this time the audience was very excited, but Moz himself was a bit less filled with enthusiasm. Perhaps he was a bit tired ?
Also the Deinze crowd seemed older (lots of Smiths fans in their thirties, perhaps even forties) than the public in Köln: in Deinze nobody seemed to know for instance "Roy’s Keen", but in Germany they all sang along to it and continued to sing after the song. On the other hand "Meat is Murder" got a huge response in Belgium, but in Köln it was apparently received as just another song ... or is my impression on this completely wrong?

Well, whatever ...

PS. My favorite lyrics change : "stoned around Sloane Square"
