Morrissey in Berlin

Date: Tuesday, Oct. 26 1999, at 7:45 p.m.

When i got out of the tube, I thought that I would be too late. I arrived at 6:45. Only a few people waited in front of the entrance. I approached as near as possible to the doors and made it up to the third row. Some of the West Ham girls stood near the doors.

Tickets were still available (54 DM). People talked about the cancellation of the Dresden concert, how it was last time that they saw Morrissey ...

About ten past seven the doors were opened. The ticket was checked, and I was checked by the security guard. I went through the lobby. The concert-hall was almost empty, only a few people already stood in the very front. I succeeded in standing in the first row two meters to the speakers at the right side. I never dreamt of getting so close.

At 8:05 the hall was pretty crowded when Sack started to play. I heared them for the first time and they gave a good warm-up. The singer acted a bit like a pantomime. He amused me when mocking at the security guards. Sack left the stage about 8:45.

Strange sounds of a radio play or a movie were played in the break. And what a long break it was. Finally the drum part of 'The Operation' sounded from tape. At 9:28 Morrissey and the band entered the stage. Flowers were thrown, but only some of them reached the stage because there was gap of 2 or 3 meters between the first row and the stage. Most of the flowers Morrissey threw back.

They started with 'You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side'. A banana helped Morrissey to illustrate the urinal scene in 'The Boy Racer'. He seemed to be in good mood. When somebody shouted 'I love you' Morrissey asked 'Why?'. To someone's requesting 'We need new songs!' he replied 'So write them.'. While they played 'Meat Is Murder' Morrissey tossed on the ground, and was stabbed by Boz's guitar in the end.

During the regular part nobody tried to get over the barrier. 2 or 3 times Morrissey tried to touch the outstretched hands of his fans. But only a few people were able to touch him because of the long gap. When Morrissey played the faster songs, the crowed heavily moved.

After 'Break Up The Family' Morrissey and the band left the stage. Some minutes later they came back. Morrissey said 'Cause it's Berlin' and they played 'Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me'. This was the moment for about 5 to 10 fans to jump over the barrier. Morrissey thanked them. All were catched by the security guards and taken away. One of them somehow must have got rid of them. He appeared on the right side of the stage, made his way to Morrissey and huged him.

Morrissey vanished. The band played a few more minutes and disappered, too. It was 10:42. It seemed that everbody enjoyed the show. But the audience could have been a litte more enthusiastic. Only a few times there were 'Morrissey, Morrissey' shouts. The crowd did not really request for an encore; there were moments when it was almost silent!

I liked the concert. I bought a t-shirt with the 'Southpaw Grammar' picture on the front and the tour dates on the back (40 DM; the dates of the states are missing). Satisfied I went home.

The set list (not sure for the order between 'Lost' and 'Now My Heart Is Full'):
You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side / The Boy Racer /
Billy Budd / Reader Meet Author / Is It Really So Strange? /
Sunny / Hairdresser On Fire / Lost / Speedway / November
Spawned A Monster / Trouble Loves Me / Meat Is Murder /
Tomorrow / Now My Heart Is Full / Break Up The Family //
Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
