A Swallow on My Neck
Sunny
Good shout on these two. There's a period in the mid-90s that seems to get ignored, both by Morrissey playing live, and by the fans in general. Other songs from this period that really need re-evaluating include Black Eyed Susan, Nobody Loves Us, You Must Please Remember, and Interlude.
I saw him perform A Swallow On My Neck at the Barrowlands in 1999, but I don't think he played it many times after that, and as far as I know nobody recorded it. It's got a really beautiful vocal melody👍

I’d probably say it’s my favourite period for Morrissey songs, and to hear “A Swallow” live would be a dream; “Sunny”, too. These lines are everything:

Oh, with your jean belt wrapped around your arm/Oh, Sunny, my heart goes out to you/And with a needle pressed onto tight skin/Sunny, I cry when I see where it's taken you

It might not be Glasgow, but here’s a live version, for you, from the same tour:

When he played 'Swallow' at the Barras, he said to the audience "You all look so shocked". I think half the audience didn't know it, and the other half couldn't believe he'd played it.

Those very lyrics you've quoted are exactly why I love Sunny. I lost a dear friend to heroin, and those lines always remind me of her. The first time I heard the song, I burst out laughing because I couldn't believe Morrissey had encapsulated the situation so perfectly.

I wish Morrissey would focus a little of his live set on that era for a change. Think how often he's had Throwing My Arms Around Paris, or IBEH in the set over the last decade or so. That period of his music just seems to get ignored.

I'll be downloading the audio from the Swallow YouTube clip, so thanks for that👍👍
