I remember them (him) from the early 80s. It was really only an Irish chap named Frank Tovey. I cna't say I've heard too much of his output, though I do have a song on an Electronica compilation - Ricky's Hand - and it's great example of minimalism with imagination.

fad gadget f***ing RULES

i have everything by fad gadget, and almost all tovey's solo stuff. "fireside favourites" is one of the best albums ever. many copied, but he was an original.

i somewhere have a boot of his last show before he died - essential listening. you would never know most of the songs were over 20 years old.

i remember buying "fireside favourites" at rasputins in berkeley right around the time "construction time again" had come out, simply cos he was on mute as well and everything i had read about him was effusive in praise. my mind was BENT at first listen (hell of a record for an 11-12 year old). and the albums show his progression as a songwriter from there really well - exceptionally singular and literate.

the 12" of "collapsing new people" is a must-have.

I just know that when i first heard it? i had to get as much of it as i could get. Many of the music stores in L.A/ didnt carry it though. Amoeba had a copy, but wouldn't sell it to me, so i was disappointed.
