But why did Morrissey retract the statements he made about the Arctic Monkeys? For once, Morrissey's criticism of another band was accurate and deserving. While their album is good, in no way are they even comparable to the Smiths. There are clearly other modern bands that are more worthy of that title. There really is no depth to their music. I don't ever remember Morrissey being apologetic for anything he's said in the past. This should be no exception.

If you read the original quotes without attendant nonsense...

You'll see that while it is an apology, nothing in the original quote is that damning, and nothing in the "apology" is that apologetic. I think it was more a case of Morrissey speaking too soon and then thinking back to how quickly The Smiths rose to fame.

The rise is where the similarities end, though. If TAM are around as long as The Smiths, let alone Morrissey solo, I'll eat my hat (I don't own one, but I'll go buy one and add some black pepper).
