I see a lot of people judge songs as "worse" when they are in a style that is unusual, either to them or to the artist. I always loved the song "Golden Lights" and thought it was funny, touching, and I like the arranged vocal harmonies. It's very different but it didn't even stand out enough that I looked to see it was a cover.
I see the same thing with songs like "Harsh Truth of the Camera Eye." I always liked it. The words are strange and funny and it has a nice vocal melody. It's not a long song. I can't think that I'd be in a rush to skip it.
I think doing a different and unusual style is different than the song not being good.
A+
Mine?
The Smiths - Reel Around The Fountain... I think it has something to do with it being at the end of a mixtape I had in my car for ages... It cut off half way through the song, so I constantly heard the first half. I just got burned out after hearing the first part so often, waiting to hear the second half when playing the album proper just doesn't seem worth it these days.
MIM - Barbarism Begins At Home
TQID - Never Had No One Ever
SHWC - "Last Night..."
Viva Hate - Alsatian Cousin... Not bad, but never made a huge impression on me. Has its moments.
Kill Uncle - Asian Rut... f***ing boring. A brief song that seems to drone on forever.
Your Arsenal - Seasick, yet Still Docked... Sometimes, I feel like it fails to have the emotional impact it intends to.
Vauxhall & I - Spring-Heeled Jim... Can't really explain it, but it's lost my favor over time (in terms of Morrissey songs in general, not just the songs on V&I). I guess it just became boring to listen to after X number of times. It sorta just drones on compared to the rest of the album.
Southpaw Grammar - "Pupils"... though it's not bad. It's not my first choice for a Morrissey song, either. The length has little to do with it, though I think it could have afforded to be condensed down into its best parts.
Maladjusted - Sorrow Will Come In The End... Sounds like a bad reinterpretation of "Harsh Truth", plus the keys are so cheesy and fake-sounding. Ambitious Outsiders has the benefit of making cheesy ROMpler voices sound good through good composition and some interesting samples, whereas "Sorrow" comes off as gaudy filler.
YATQ - America Is Not the World... This song in particular suffers from excruciatingly poor writing (I have no problem with the views expressed, but, holy hell, it is so badly written that it just comes across as retarded notebook ranting from some circa-2004, 15-year-old suburban punk who listens to too much Saddle Creek music).
ROTT - Dear God Please Help Me... Don't particularly dislike it, though it's probably my least favorite from ROTT.
Years of Refusal - Something Is Squeezing My Skull... Seems like it tries to be all raucous and energetic, but it just falls flat for me.
