For what it's worth, I actually thought he looked best around this time. I think he looks healthier with a little meat on his bones, he's too scrawny now - very ageing - and the jet black hair just seems to accentuate it.

I think this was probably an understandable reaction by a 23-year old guy who'd spent the last five years with everyone thinking he was gay and he wasn't.

I know what you mean about Electronic, they were distressingly mainstream after the Smiths. But you know what? Some of the songs really hold up with some beautiful melodies and guitar work.

He became teetotal in about 2000 and quit smoking a couple of years later, I think. I remember reading that it took him 4 or 5 attempts to quit fully and he said it was "tortuous".
