Morrissey Central WHY HAS COMMON SENSE BECOME SO … UNCOMMON? (July 4, 2020)

Have you seen The South Bank Show, where he releases his anger outside of (and about) the social housing that replaced his childhood home? You can take it literally.

I know he rages sometimes - but most of his interviews read like he's making sick jokes - & the magazines seem to encourage it with lines like 'Take it up the Arsenal' & the 'Mohamet of Mope' & now they're acting as if he was the only one crossing lines.

I accept that he’s wilfully provocative, and often hilariously so. However, his level of enthusiasm for Britain First wasn’t entirely surprising to me.

Incidentally, I did read their manifesto. And it was shite.

For Britain! The weirder one.

He's obviously not one of nature's minglers - but I think if he was a racist it wouldn't be this strange.

Ha! For Britain! Who could forget?

I love that one, but never read it as particularly political. You do?

I get a sense that he felt he had been displaced. There is certainly a level of righteous indignation. And genuine anger and a sense of betrayal—as much as resignation.

Frankly, outside of the Echo Arena, and his stand-up argument with Jez at a gig, it’s the most pissed off I’ve seen him.

I love his work & I think he's savable.

But if all you get when you search his name online is a torrent of racism & articles listing his word crimes & demanding that he be stamped out of the culture forever because he's a cancer - it's going to be that much harder.

No libs will be owned. No white nationalist cause will be furthered. But a lot of beautiful songs will be unlistened to.

He was displaced.

I think a lot of his galloping insecurity comes from childhood losses - the kitten that they loved but left behind, the house that was knocked down, the friend that dumped him for liking queer things - he was learning that loved ones will abandon you forever & you're not even safe in your own home.

It will pass. If Jewish people can recover Wagner then Blighty can revisit Morrissey.

Due to someone on here, I was last week recalling what Elvis Costello said to Ray Charles. Morrissey has come nowhere near close to anything like that.

But those sales figures, for Dog, were dismal. I think it’s significant. Less because it inevitably signals an end, but more because I’m not sure he has what it takes (youthful energy and hunger) to make sure it doesn’t.

I grew up in a rather idyllic and rural part of the east coast of the United States and saw the same thing happen to my childhood, so to speak. Where there was once a field, now there's a housing development. Where I once ran and played with friends, now there's a smattering of McMansions. Old dirt paths turned into cul-de-sacs. And so on.

I felt angry, too. But in the end you chalk it up to the impersonal, unsentimental thrust of "progress" and move on, painful as it may be. Nothing stays the same.

Maybe not but at this point, Moz doesn’t need to make any more records. The guy has “f*** you money” which is why he’s saying “f*** you” things.
If worse came to worst, he could get insane money singing at a casino somewhere.

I just can't bear that someone would spend 40 years singing about pain & we'd turn on him for lacking self-control & think we're being moral or funny while we're doing it.

When did you get into Morrissey, six months ago?

It's the impact on his health though - it's one thing to sing about how much you hate yourself but to have most of the world start to affirm that you're quite right to hate yourself, not many people could really survive that, no matter how much of a front they put on.

Patriotic Alternative has stolen a lot of their members. Ann-Marie Waters had a complete meltdown over it.
