What is the saddest non-Morrissey song you've ever heard?

De Rosa - The Engineer

Your mother’s on your side
Your daughter painted white
Your father’s awkward frown
Your hometown burning down

I built everything you can see from here
I am the engineer
All inside of me
Really is veneer
The surface made of fear
But somewhere north of here
You will find me dear
Walking in the snow
You can think of me
From your town below

I don’t know what this means
But did you take it in
Into your head that I
Could find you in the night

We built everything you can see from here
We are the engineers
All inside of us
Really is veneer
Our surface made of fear
But somewhere north of here
You will find us dear
Walking in the snow
You can think of us
From your town below

What does love mean
When it’s made by a machine? (8x)

The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy - Water Pistol Man

When girls dressed in black they all look so lonely
and contraceptives don't get used by the horny
you can't find the key to the door in your building
but are you still willing
the responsibility becomes an afterthought
when one remembers the things that they should've bought
there's no pretending that you forgot
must everything in life have political ramifications
even taking kids on vacation or having a simple operation
but my friend Billy told me that sometimes
it takes a grown man a long time to learn
just what it takes a child a night to learn
and my son proved his words

[Chorus]
Water pistol man full of ammunition
squirtin' at fires on a worldwide mission
but did you ever think to stop to squirt
the flowers in your own backyard

for all my faux pa's I never said excuse me
was the simplest things that always confused me
I never stopped I never looked both ways
must it always a tug of love between friends and work
hope to learn the meaning of the word jerk
before it happens to a rope round my neck
let's build a bigger telescope
so that we can see things more up close
farther away from where we really are
I was up the whole night before
reading books about places I'll probably never go
and those aren't good things to know about

when I feel with my heart, I know in my mind
I should say with my lips
but don't does that make you feel upset?
I should know that the power of one man seems like a small squirt
when he aims at the flames of the whole earth
but the fire starts at home...

[Chorus]

No.21. Das Wirtshaus (The Inn) from Schubert's song-cycle "Winterreise". In fact all 24 songs, but particularly that one.

Probably already been posted (couldn't be arsed trawling through the previous 15 pages), but Jeff Buckley's version of 'Hallelujah' gets me every time.

It's weird. I can listen to sad lyrics all day long & it doesn't affect me at all. But sad music in the background can tip me over the edge.

Lately it's King Of Rock And Roll by Prefab Sprout. It's got a really sad bass line which sounds sort of impossible but it works for me.

I'll have a go at a top five though:

Prefab Sprout: King Of Rock & Roll
Blur: He Thought Of Cars
Madness: Yesterday's Men
The Streets: Dry Your Eyes
Guillemots: Sao Paulo

Very few Morrissey songs make me sad. The saddest song for me is Cat's Cradle by Jim Croce.

My father wasn't like that and I'm not that kind of father but the song itself is sad for what could have been for my son but luckily is not.

Just listened to "Sunday Morning Coming Down" a Kris Kirstofferson song, sung by Johnny Cash. It gets me everytime. It's that great voice that makes the song so very, very touching.

On the Sunday morning sidewalk,
Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cos there's something in a Sunday,
Makes a body feel alone.

Now there's something a man can relate to. :(

I don't know if it's already posted in here, but I think that Blasphemous Rumours from Depeche Mode deserves a place in here!

Girl of sixteen, whole life ahead of her
Slashed her wrists, bored with life
Didnt succeed, thank the lord
For small mercies

Fighting back the tears, mother reads the note again
Sixteen candles burn in her mind
She takes the blame, it's always the same
She goes down on her knees and prays

I dont want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that god's got a sick sense of humor
And when I die I expect to find him laughing

Girl of eighteen, fell in love with everything
Found new life in jesus christ
Hit by a car, ended up
On a life support machine

Summers day, as she passed away
Birds were singing in the summer sky
Then came the rain, and once again
A tear fell from her mother's eye

I dont want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that god's got a sick sense of humor
And when I die I expect to find him laughing

It always brings tears to my eyes, especially because I feel terrible with the picture of mother crying for her child, it makes me so depressed...:tears::tears:
DM has lots of sad songs: In Your Room, Black Celebration, Halo, Dream On, Useless etc.
But they're definetly not emos. Why do people call them this way?

"Anna O.," by Far Too Jones.

http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/13/65147/Anna O.mp3

Should I breathe a new and bolder breath
Or hold my breath and pass the candle
I feel darkness press the edge
See the shadows fall so gently
Across the face of Anna as she
Holds the hand of someone I don't see
I beg, "Mama make me anything,
just make me anyone but me,"
But Mama, she don't talk much anymore

Tearing me down on Sunday afternoon
Closing my eyes to all that's said and done
And if this town is breaking down
Oh, I know they'll know my name
And when I get to heaven I'll complain
I'll complain

Anna sits so silent
She's got her hands against the window pane
And she comforts me though I try not to hear
And well, maybe it's just a bit too much
Or then maybe we don't see the signs
Either way she ain't comin' back

Tearing me down on Sunday afternoon
Closing my eyes to all I've said and done
And if this town is breaking me down
Then I know you'll know my name
And when I get to heaven I'll complain
Or just stand around

Anna brings me fireflies
She breaks the jar just to free the light
And I tear my skin when she begins
No don't tell me that you know me
No don't tell me that you talk to God
'cause I know my name
I just don't know my place

Tearing me down on Sunday afternoon
And I know I'm closing my eyes to all I've said and done
And if this town is breaking down
Oh, I know you'll know my name
And when I get to heaven I'll complain
I said if we get to heaven we'll complain
We won't stand around

Don't stand around
There's nowhere left to run

"Blind," by Train.

http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/13/65147/Blind.mp3

The color of my hair is changing,
My skin is soft, too soft for a man my age
And I am never alone
Where is time taking me?

Nothing is real, this is how I feel
And nothing is wrong but everything takes too long

How did this end up me against you?
With everything that I say, and everything you do
Your smile is changing - yeah
Where is time taking you?

Nothing is real, this is how I feel
Nothing is good, but I don't mind being blind
If you don't mind doing time
Nothing is wrong but everything takes too long

Hey by the way, when I fell to your wayside
Did I crash or just slide?
Hey by the way, when I pulled myself up to your wayside
Did I hurt you or just slide in?

So this is how it feels to get a little older
And some would say wiser
We know what that means, maybe not
Well maybe that's what that means, maybe not

Nothing is real, this is how I feel
Nothing is good, but I don't mind being blind
If you don't mind doing time
Nothing is wrong but everything takes too long

Hey by the way, when I fell to your wayside
Did I crash or just slide?
Hey by the way, when I pulled myself up to your wayside
Did I hurt you or just slide in?

I believe in love

"Floodlights," by Gus Black.

http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/13/65147/Floodlights.mp3

Boomtown escape
A crash course in hate
With a smile on my face
You caught me at the worst time of day

Say we'll never stop
'til we're out of the race
And the floodlights start to fade
Say we'll never stop
'til we're out of the race
And the floodlights start

Two hours late
Last home train
It's all a bad mistake
You said it was the first sign of taste

Say we'll never stop
'til we're out of the race
And the floodlights start to fade
Say we'll never stop
'til we're out of the race
And the floodlights start

As we've come
We've come undone

Boomtown escape
Crash course in hate
With a smile on my face
You caught me at the worst time of day

Say we'll never stop
'til we're out of the race
And the floodlights start to fade

Against the backdrop of broken hearts
We both tried our best to start a new
But it’s never moving
Against the backdrop of broken hearts
I soon felt the urge to drift apart from you
Because it’s never moving

Oh, July
Why must you come when I’m close to getting over you?
Oh, July
I saw you in the shadows and I’m close to getting over you
So close to getting over you

Against the backdrop of broken dreams
We tried our hardest but now it seems it’s true
It was never moving
Against the backdrop of broken dreams
Our conversations covered the meagre themes we knew
But it was never moving

Oh, July
Why must you come when I’m close to getting over you?
Oh, July
I saw you in the shadows and I’m close to getting over you
So close to getting over you

I saw July then July saw me
It saw us together and knew we can’t be
I saw July then July saw me
It saw us together and knew we can’t be

July
So close
So close to getting over you
July
So close
So close to getting over you

In the Sun: by Joseph Arthur or Michael Stipe-take your pick

Regret is often what stirs emotions most....I find this song by Joseph Arthur, and re-done excellently by Michael Stipe and Chris Martin a truly sad song:

I picture you in the sun wondering what went wrong
And falling down on your knees asking for sympathy
And being caught in between all you wish for and all you seen
And trying to find anything you can feel that you can believe in

May God's love be with you
Always
May God's love be with you

I know i would apologize if i could see your eyes
'Cause when you showed me myself i became someone else
But i was caught in between all you wish for and all you need
I picture you fast asleep
A nightmare comes
You can't keep awake

May God's love be with you
Always
May God's love be with you

'Cause if i find
If i find my own way
How much will i find
If i find
If i find my own way
How much will i find
You

I don't know anymore
What it's for
I'm not even sure
If there is anyone who is in the sun
Will you help me to understand
'Cause i been caught in between all I wish for and all I need
Maybe you're not even sure what it's for
Any more than me

May God's love be with you
Always
May God's love be with you

LWTUA by Joy Division is just a truly great song, with some of the greatest lyrics every written by a truly tortured mind. It's just the ending is too real for this songwriter and his music. Cut Here and Pictures of You are the Cure's materpieces in this arena. Besides those, 99 balloons and Walking on Sunshine always make me want to slit my wrist.
