Well, if I'm not mistaken, the Brits call pharmasists chemists, so I've always taken it to mean drugies loafing about the local drug store. I could be way off though. I need a British to English dictionary.

That's close enough in my book of brit-speak Gen.

loafing oafs = to Loaf is to do bugger all, Oafs are people who do bugger all
all night chemist as Gen says, it's a pharmacist/drugstore check out Boots the chemist on google. the 'all night' bit is, that there's only a certain few who stay open all night, or they rota late night chemists so that you can pick up a presciption in an emergency.

shedder-of-lite (ale)

Grim O'Grady

Whilst that is it's literal meaning it implies illness amongst people who do nothing and the need for a cure.
Who or what is he refering to there, I wonder?

See 'Julian & Sandy' (http://www.fabe.co.uk/page6.htm). The 'loafing oafs' line is one of many borrowed from them ...

Brighton Rock...

I can't remember if the oafs in "Brighton Rock" loaf at the chemist, but there are plenty of other references from this absolutely brilliant novel in "Now My Heart is Full". Check it out.

Re: Brighton Rock...

Morrissey met me at the local Drug Mart at 3am one night and he decided to write a song about it.

What puzzles me is why 'loaves' is the plural of 'loaf'. But 'oafs' is the plural of 'oaf'. Shouldn't it be 'oaves'?

Does this keep anyone else awake at nights? Or is it just me?

Why is life so hard?

LOL, Yeah whatever you say Patrick.
Thats so nice of Tony to invite Tie and the guys over for tea especially since The Leafs will probably be nice and thirsty seeing that Championship banner raised at the Meadowlands.

It's okay for Tony to invite who he wants, but it's Carmela who has to do all the work!!!!
