What did make you smile today?

Hmm, curious. Some cultural markers are really quite subtle, aren't they? I am struggling to pinpoint why this place does not look at all like an authentic English pub, yet I know it doesn't. The name doesn't help, it must be said. Most pub names are really old and have their roots in local legends and traditions - like the Old Dog and Kipper, or the Ploughman's Septic Toe, or whatever. Personally I'm quite partial to a decent Scotch egg and a steak and kidney pie, although I cannot eat either at the moment (alas). Think yourself lucky, if it had been a Scottish-themed pub you'd have been serving deep-fried Mars bars.
It was a real labor of love for the owner, Don Younger, and he spent a lot of time in England over his life. He was a good man. Like Charles Bukowski minus any literary ability. (and most of the abuse at least until he was 15 pints or so in) The part that I like, is he was the first to start selling microbrews (aka real ale) in Oregon in the 1980's when it was anything but popular. But he loved it, and pushed this cloudy stuff on anyone who would drink it, and even those who wouldn't, taking on new beers from the up and coming brew scene, and now, Portland is referred to as Beervana. He was a tastemaker and a caveman. When he died, his wake was a complete clusterf*** as nearly 100 kegs were donated by local breweries, drained over the course of the day, and turned into a complete shit show that closed down the entire street with drunken people.

Brilliant story! Beervana :lbf:

That's why it always makes me laugh when people pull the whole "Urgh! Wot does America know about beer, anyway? Buncha piss water!" attitude. Sure, some people drink flavorless piss. But the beer is excellent and has been for decades. Of course geography plays a part in availability. You're not likely to find a good IPA or Saison in backwoods Appalachia. But I hear they've been making up for the fact by gobbling opiates, so at least they have that going for them.

Surprising what part geography plays. I have never tasted Guinness remotely like the stuff I drank in Ireland, and everyone who goes there says the same. Surely that can only be the water? I can't think why Guinness would want their product tasting like cold stewed tea in other countries.

It's probably that they just never clean the beer tap lines! Maybe a little extra funk adds to it! Also- you need an old school pump tap for Guinness if it's to taste even remotely palatable. Dammit. It's only breakfast time, I've not had a drink since May, and now I'm feeling like going to have breakfast pints at the Brass!

Just called dad and reminded him where we were on this day in 1983. I am now just 3 years from being the same age he was then.

You're a strange character Fanny.
You spout hateful racism and then something like this where you appear very warm and loving.
Tell me, who is the real Fanny?

Nazis are humasexuals too. The real Fanny-Anne is you and your boyfriend is Fanny-Man.

You give us a glimpse and then dash and hide again behind your persona.
But it's too late Fanny, we have seen your human side.
Tell me, is your Dad aware of the hatred you spill here?
I would guess not.
You cannot be proud of the nastiness you post.
It's your little secret.
My guess is that your father remembers the war and the Nazis are a real people to him.
Does it occur to you he might be shocked at what you post?
(Ofcourse, he might be a racist too and you learnt from him. That would be consistent with your views on nature v nurture).

LOL

Your interest in me is fascinating. My dad fought against socialists all his life and like me had a huge interest in the nazis and what happened back then. With time he has started to realise that history is a big lie forced down our throats every day. My dad is a massive jazz fan and dealt with a lot of black people in his time so not racist at all and nor am I. You like many others turned me into a racist as I did not agree with your views and I never will. I do not live in a political correct bubble waiting for the day when they erase me from the history book like you people do and you gladly will work for your own holocaust.
What you find nasty other find to be the truth so maybe you should work on opening up a bit and realise the things your parents and teachers told you were all a pack of lies though choosing to embrace the truth is nothing I would recommend anyone. Stay where you are and lose all you have.

Great response Fanny!
OK, first of all, if you are not racist then you do agree with atleast some of my views, no?
I do not know what political correctness means so there is fertile territory for discussion.
History is a lie? Well, there are many histories and some are indeed lies (in my opinion).
Maybe I am delusional but if so then might you not be?
You appear to be very angry at the likes of myself and Charlie (who is clearly a thoughtful and humane person which is probably why he scares you so).
No one has made you a racist. If you are one, you must take responsibility.
You say I made you a racist? How so?
The reason you interest me is because initially you came across as a troll.
You followed the usual pattern of trolls, ie, spout as much xenophobic hatred as possible in an attempt to upset us liberal snowflakes.
(this is always a daft strategy as you only reinforce our self belief as trolls simply look unhinged and are not taken seriously).
But you have showed signs that you are not inhuman or stupid.
Why not concentrate on what we have in common? (we both are atheists for example).
You'd be much more likely to prove how right you are by being reasonable.
If you revert to trolling you're much easier to dismiss and have a laugh at.
Yes, I am probably your worst enemy (socialist, Corbyn fan) but I am not a bad person. I wish no harm to anyone.
You might even like me (and Charlie) if we met.
Would not this place not be more enjoyable for you without making enemies all over the shop?

Good points Peter. My opinions here are just some of my opinions. To be persistently angry with somebody because they have different viewpoints seems strange to me. I'll argue something passionately but that doesn't mean I think the person I'm discussing something with is a bad person. One of my favourite people is a far righter, even after a lot of beers we still laugh when we're arguing politics and I reckon while we're talking we convince ourselves that we can convince the other person to come over to our side. The trouble with online forums is you only see a part of a person. Mind, I can see this kind of rationale will anger one or two people on here.

Hi Charles,
Funny you should say that.
I worked in Cambridge for about 5 years and during that time one of the most racist, right wing people I have ever met, was my inseparable, bestest friend.
The mechanism we had to overcome the politics was that he found me (unintentionally) hilarious and never took a word I said seriously.
Bastard.
