As far as I can see, his point is that any band, no matter how idolized, is 'just another band'... he listed The Smiths together with The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Nirvana, Pixies, Radiohead..., which seems like the list of some of the most adored and revered bands in rock history. I don't see anything offensive in that.
I also presume that he didn't name those bands because he dislikes them - he doesn't seem to dislike The Clash, in any case, since he earlier said 'thou shalt not take the name of Joe Strummer in vain'.
