I agree. There has always been an element of attention seeking in his public persona, craving a bit of notoriety. When he was young and made those comments about the Brighton bomb etc... he got away with it because he was funny and people thought it was typical Moz, likes to stir the pot.

It just strikes differently today when so much of that goodwill is gone. There's no music to distract from it either, so the just looks like trolling. And for someone who recently told Johnny to shut up and stop using him for clickbait, it's hypocritical.

I spoke to Mike at an Echo and the Bunnymen gig at Bridgewater Hall in 2018. There were 6 of us and someone asked him if he would mind having a picture took with us. He stayed chatting while he had his pint. He was asked a few questions, including whether he thought Morrissey was racist (this wasn't long after the Ann Marie comments) his exact words were, no is he f***. I asked something about playing with The Smiths and his reply was a surprise as he said the enjoyed playing with Buzzcocks more than The Smiths as he got into drumming after seeing them live so it was a real honour to play with them for a while.

A genuine nice bloke, I've seen him a few times round Altrincham since then.
