Visiting Manchester on Sunday...

Hey, some friends and I are coming up to Manchester for the day on Sunday, party due to the fact that the tickets were free :thumb: but mainly because we want to visit Salford Lads Club.

Are there any other places near Salford you'd suggest seeing?

Also, how far is Salford to the City Centre and how long will it take to get there?

Thanks for any help!

You can pick up this book at a Manchester gift shop.

It's a long way to go if you're just going there for the day. I assume you are travelling from London?!

What tickets do you have?

London to Manchester is about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Thats not all that bad for a day trip?

From memory, the other sight in Salford that has been added to the book is the Lowry - Moz performed there as a solo-ist (maybe that should be the group name for people who use this website?). Phill might also have included Salford Uni Maxwell Hall (Smiths gig and Marr lecture). If you do go there then pop into the City Art gallery next door - currently running an exhibition on Thomas Paine http://www.visitmanchester.com/What...eSize=10&fromDate=14/6/2009&ToDate=14/6/2009&

Other than that, there is nothing, absolutely nothing, to see in Salford. The Salford Music Map scrapes the barrel a bit with some other venues http://www.visitsalford.info/whattosee/music/musicmap/venueinformation.htm

Head back to Manchester - there's loads to do. You might be lucky at the Tourist Info Centre to be able to pick up a Manchester Music Map - http://www.creativelynx.co.uk/pages/liberated/music_map.htm Or if you are in town on Saturday, you may be lucky enough to find Phill standing on a street corner getting wet http://www.manchestermusictours.com/

Thanks Dave
Yes, the Salford sites are Maxwell Hall, Lads Club and the Lowry.
The last time I picked up a copy of the Manchester music map from the town hall, it was in Japanese or Chinese only! I picked it up and thought I'd send it to Kewpie but never got round to it!
Yes the Salford map does scrap the barrel a little bit (schools / colleges where Barney or Tony Wilson went to)
I'll be in town today at 1pm doing the walking tour:guitar:

Salford is right next to the city centre (the River Irwell being the boundary). The Lads Club is not too far to walk (if you know where you are going!) - best getting the no 33 bus from Piccadilly bus station and get off two stops after Sainsbury's on Regent Road. Then ask anyone where it is (which is just round the corner)

Seriously? It takes between 4 and half and 5hrs from Bournemouth.

Yes, the Bournemouth train stops off here there and everywhere (Southampton, Basingstoke, Reading, Oxford, Banbury, coventry and all stops Birmingham to Manchester).
The Manchester - London train these days stops only at Stoke, Macc, Stockport (and maybe Milton Keynes)

What you meant to say was ''you can find all the Manchester sites here''
http://empire-uk.com/moz09.htm
and can buy a copy for £5 from Empire Exchange, 1 Newton Street, in the city centre:thumb:

The Hacienda is apartments, not a hotel.
Completed the walking tour this afternoon, 14 turned up, including 3 Aussies and 1 German - the rest being from throughout England

I'm interested in your market research - how did those 14 people know about the tour? Is it an occasional plug on solo, or is it a result of your high media profile? Or what?

A mixture of a few things.
The website www.manchestermusictours.com is a big bonus, mainly for advance bookings, but the main 'advert' is a big poster in the tourist information centre. As you go in, the poster is right in front of you. Visitors come in and read it or ask at the counter about such tours and they are directed to the poster.
Some weeks there is no one, some weeks 20 people. We take the good days with the bad.
Today, I had a phone call (via the website) at 11am from a couple saying they would be there. So I thought 'OK, that is two punters at least'!
On arrival there was 14 punters waiting!
The majority of punters are interested in the whole general Manchester music sites. The website gives us the chance to plug the 'out of city centre' tours - Smiths / Morrissey, Joy Division & New Order and Oasis and fans of those bands usually do a private tour of those sites.
On the recent Morrissey weekend, Craig took a hen party around:eek: I did a stag do last year, but never had a hen party before! Turns out, the first gig the bride to be ever attended was Inspiral Carpets so she wanted Craig to take them around!
We do every Saturday in the late spring to early Autumn - except 4th July, not because it's American independance day, but because Craig is getting married:guitar: Should be a right Madchester day and my suit will be at the cleaners the week before:cool:

Craig and I are currently writing the 'Manchester Music Guide' and hope to have it published September / October.
