The United States as seen from a Canadian Friend

This was sent to me by one ofmy customers

Powerful! A must read!!

A very interesting editorial THE UNITED STATES

This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given
recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from
Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television
commentator. What follows is the full text of his
trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:
"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak
up for the Americans as the most generous and
possibly the least appreciated people on
all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a
lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted
out of the debris of war by the Americans
who poured in billions of dollars and forgave
other billions in debts. None of these
countries is today paying even the interest
on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in
1956, it was the Americans who propped it up,
and their reward was to be insulted and
swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there.
I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities,
it is the United States that hurries in to help.
This spring, 59 American communities were
flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy
pumped billions of dollars! into discouraged
countries. Now newspapers in those countries
are writing about the decadent, warmongering
Americans. I'd like to see just one of those
countries that is gloating over the erosion of
the United States dollar build its own airplane.
Does any other country in the world have a plane
to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed
Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why
don't they fly them? Why do all the
International lines except Russia fly
American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider
putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk
about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios.
You talk about German technocracy, and you get
automobiles.

You talk about American technocracy,
and you find men on the moon -! not once, but
several times - and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans
put theirs right in the store window for
everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers
are not pursued and hounded. They are here on
our streets, and most of them, unless they are
breaking Canadian laws, are getting American
dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India
were breaking down through age, it was the
Americans who rebuilt them. When the
Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central
went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose.
Both are still broke. I can name you 5000
times when the Americans raced to the help of
other people in trouble. Can you name me even
one time when someone else raced to the
Americans in trouble? I don't think there was
outside help even during the San Francisco
earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one
Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them
get kicked around. They will come out of this
thing with their flag high. And when they do,
they are entitled to thumb their nose at the
lands that are gloating over their present
troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

Stand proud, America!

This is one of the best editorials that I have ever
read regarding the United States. It is nice that
one man realizes it. I only wish that the rest of the
world would realize it. We are always blamed for
everything and never even get a thank you for the
things we do.I would hope that each of you would send
this to as many people as you can and emphasize that
they should send it to as many of their friends
until this letter is sent to every person on the web.

I am just a single American that has read this.

I SURE HOPE THAT A LOT MORE READ IT SOON.

Interesting article. Funny someone as shallow as you can grasp the spirit of it.

The speech above, by Gordon Sinclair, was broadcast in 1973. That's right, 1973! How, then, is its shallow glorification of the US relevant today?

Because nothing's changed. The US continues to provide relief for countries in need and gets nothing but hollow insults in return. Some say we're warmongers, others say we're cowards. The only thing consistent about the insults thrown at Americans is the inconsistency. For that reason, and many others, we pay no attention to it. There isn't enough time in my day to wonder about what a bunch of limey, backstabbing pussies have to say about my country.

Thanks

And Britain thanks you for the insult, cheers for that. Maybe you don't realise the huge tide of public support around the world for the US at this time, and I believe that Britain was the first to offer its assistance. Please don't underestimate the benefit of NATO countries siding with the US and turning this from an attack on the US to an attack on everything decent and civilised in the world at large. Unfortunately, posts like this below do little to help this process of mutual condemnation.

>There isn't enough time in my day to wonder

Not intended for all British

Hey, I wasn't insulting all of Britain, just those who are limey, backstabbing pussies. I lived there for years and have family and friends there, so I know that the views of a few extremist Morrissey fans don't even come close to representing the views of the country. I have just had enough of people talking @#!!! on the US, especially at a time like this. I personally don't care if Morrissey lives here or there or what anyone thinks about it. I don't know the guy, and I can listen to his music just the same either way. I was just lashing back at the guilty parties, you know who you are.

Yes, it was intended for all British.

My tiny local church is flying it's flag at half mast for you, our newspapers and our television and our radio are reporting non-stop, and Britain is absolutely horrified and in a massive state of shock. We've played your National Anthem for you today, and as good as signed a blank cheque, and this it the thanks we get? Well, cheers.

You're the one that's being pathetic.

P.S

I do hope this will not disintegrate into another 'Who's best - America or Britain?' argument again. The last thing we need at the moment is 'I'm the best, I'm the best' petty squabbles.

You're Right

All my family there can @#!!! themselves because Little Miss Curious says so. There's nothing that pisses me off more than someone who TELLS someone else what they meant by something. As if I'm not the one who made the comment. I know what I meant by it, your clarification is not necessary. But thanks.

I don't like people who backpeddle.

Why you!!! (shaking fists) Your lucky I don't catch you on the little box thing that goes (boink bink) because Griselda Fishflopper, you have not just challenged me but you have also challenged my friend um...um...Boz Boorer.

"That's right and we'll take-ya you out!"

And in New Zealand flags also fly at half-mast, telephone companies offer free phonecalls to the USA, candle lit vigils, large companies granting special compassionate leave, the entire government sending messages of support to the USA government. Even this morning I receieved an email from the world library association President with his condolences to the many librarians who would have been killed. The same will be happening in other countries. At times we really are one global village. Lets stop the mud slinging. Regardless of what country it happened in, it is indeed a heinous crime.

Issue one: Whenever America wants millitary support (which is what we always want) we always get it from our usual suspects, so it's untrue that we don't get aid. We get the lives of others who may or may not benefit from the spoils of war.

Issue two: we routinely send in the CIA to train regimes that are friendly to our interests to overthrow those who aren't. People starve, are robbed from, and their standards of living topple. Look at Iraq. We have a qualm with their government, yet because of the blockade that continues, nearly a million people have died, most of those being civillians. which if you know, if there was even one person amongst those who might have wanted Hussein "overthrown" or didn't support him for whatever reason, laying starving in the streets, then we have basically proven ourselves as unjust as the hijackers who got on that plane. We have taken it upon ourselves as to look at all Iraqi's "the same", the same feeling that caused people to find anyone who was Arabic and beat them up these past couple of days. I know we say that if we twist the arm of the Iraqi's enough that they will "overthrow" Hussein, but look at it logically. These people can't even get anything to eat. How on earth are they going to have enough resources to do anything on such a scale? And when you are holding a starving child in your arms, do you blame your government or the people who have the ships surrounding your country and turning food away?

Issue 3: I don't think even the American public knows most of this. It's spun in such a way that we are out "protecting freedom" and if you don't agree, you are a communist. It's a convenient way of browbeating people into agreeing and not really thinking about the consequences of what we do to others. We see ourselves in a land of plenty, see others elsewhere as expendable in that cause, and it comes back on us.

Issue 4: The reason why IRA does as it does was because the English treated Ireland in the same way years ago. The English moved in, renamed the area, started stealing land, and invited them to "peace talks" where a lot of them were slaughtered and deported on the other side of Ireland to ruin their power. The protestants are not "protestants". It's a code word for Presbyterian Scots who were transplanted there back in the 1600's to quell the irish. In the potato blight, there was enough food, but England refused to share and watched as they starved without blinking an eye. Given all of this, do you think that any native of Ireland would be thrilled to have people who treated them so awfully still have their presence on their soil? To give you a count, the population of Ireland is about half of what it was before the potato blight. Many had to emigrate or face the same fate.

Suzanne....

Have you ever BEEN to Ireland? Your statements, whilst mainly true, simply DO NOT represent the people of Ireland and how they feel.

It is all very well for you to be thousands of miles away in America, with distant distant relatives (3 times removed) in Ireland who throw their arms in the air at the injustices of the Brits and Ireland, and who probably slime round bars with Noraid collecting boxes, but you probably have never even been to Northern Ireland to gauge exactly what these people want.

The Irish people KNOW that if Britain pulls out its peace keeping troops, Ireland will descend into mass violence, bitterness and ultimately slaughter..... have you seen the recent images of the schoolchildren, being terrified on their way to school because they are walking in an area they shouldn't walk through? Do you think the troops or Britain caused this????

Your history lesson on Ireland, whilst in parts correct, simply isn't relevant now.... just as America's shameful treatment of the Indian tribes shouldn't taint how these people are treated today. ALL our countries have shameful pasts, if we're honest, things that simply aren't justifiable in this day and age.

We apparently live in a civilised age now, we should have learnt from our mistakes.

Ireland has a VERY small violent percentage who wreak havoc on all the decent law abiding people in the country. These decent ordinary people are proud to be British and are thankful that we have some visibility in their country because they are FRIGHTENED of what will happen if we're not there.

Maybe you should visit Ireland, talk to these people (not the faceless, nameless cowards who shake their Noraid tins throughout your country to fund their atrocities again st innocents - men, women and mainly, so it seems, children) , find out how they feel. You'd be shocked at their shame, anger, bitterness and hatred toward this small section who will never stop tainting their country with the vileness that is terrorism.

Thank you.

Know it all's, shut up and just look around before you open your mouth

Since your being so critical and I am assuming you aren't Christopher Columbus.."Indian" is an offensive term for Native Americans!!! Thank you very much.

Perhaps you should think about what you say before being so critical on everyone else you pile of donkey cum cookies.

I hate know it all's that would $hit their pants if their cable or phone went dead (read: you, so shut your f.ucking mouth moron)

Yep

Actually I got to thinking after I posted the first one, DAMN, I could have a couple of British Morrissey fans upset at me if I dont go back and clarify my post. Boy, I can't think of a more intimidating group.

Know it all? No, just obviously know FAR more than you, you quivering heap of elephant spunk
