Okey dokey - as promised, I've compiled my favourite cover versions of Smiths & Morrissey songs. Not everyone will agree, but what I've tried to do is include songs for their musical skill, comedy value, sheer chutzpah or just because I like them - I've also tried to include a few that most users will not have heard before. Some just missed the cut (Mikel Erentxun, Elefant, Charlus, Bis, The Frank & Walters) - but I believe I've reduced the musical stock to an acceptable and tasty sauce. I scoured through over 300 cover versions, and narrowed them down to this list - 22 songs, 82 minutes (so just too much for a CD) - some are live, and they vary in recording quality. By the way, The Karelia is Alex Kapranos' former band. Enjoy.

wow. i gotta hear that! thanks!

    *update*

had a quick listen, some are surprisingly good. others, well...

1 - Colin Meloy - Jack The Ripper
not bad, but gets a little tedious

2 - The Divine Comedy - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
pretty decent in a sub-Tindersticks way. imagine if the real Tindersticks recorded this one?

    3 - Jeff Buckley - I Know It's Over
    meh-ish

    4 - Bow Wow Wow - I Started Something I Couldn't Finish
    okay. nice bass

5 - Billy Bragg - Back To The Old House
this song is already kinda boring if you're not in the mood for it, and Billy Brag sounds like Morrissey being inflated with air

    6 - Gene Loves Jezebel - Ask
okay version of The Smiths worst song

7 - Alan Mesia - Pretty Girls Make Graves
    sloppy

    8 - Anthrax - London
musically pretty good, but horrible vocals

9 - David Ford - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
    schmaltzy Barry Manilowe (sp?) junk

10 - Eddi Reader - Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
    nah

11 - Everything But The Girl - Back To The Old House
    boring again

12 - Hootie & The Blowfish - Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want
i hate to say it, but not too bad.

13 - James - We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful
hard to hear, but not bad

14 - The Karelia - Please, Please, Please Let me Get What I Want
    Hootie did it better

    15 - Mojo Nixon - Girlfriend In A Coma
some sort of awful nightmare where Bruce Springsteen and The Smiths gets stuck in that machine from The Fly

    16 - The Nolan Sisters - Panic
    what the hell?

    17 - Sandie Shaw - Jeane
    eh

18 - Sinead O'Connor - The Hand That Rocks The Cradle
why would anyone cover this song?

19 - Supergrass - Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others
    i liked it

20 - The String Quartet Tribute To The Smiths - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
sounds like someone tuning a cat

    21 - Tiger Army - The Loop
    the best Moz cover ever

22 - Vision - Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before
terrible. sounds like something they'd blast over the PA in Hot Topic

*I havent listened to it yet, but is the Vision covering that song the same that put out an LP on Nemesis Records in the late 80's/early 90s?

  12. If it makes you feel any better, I believe that Andy Rourke is playing guitar on that version.

Billy Bragg doing 'Back To The Old House'... I can already hear it in my head, and it's making me laugh really a lot!

It was The Boy With The Thorn In His Side - it has frogs, I seem to remember. I'll upload it if you like.
