TWO Unseen Robert Mackie letters and Moz`s pre-Smiths articles- Fanzine "Kid`s Stuff

Re: TWO Unseen Robert Mackie letters (not included in mackie's "words by morrissey")

I'll gladly tape them for you :)

That was life right until about 1995 for me!!
I miss the days of listening to radio, hoping a tune you'd like would come on so you could tape it!

Music being so easy makes it that little bit redundant!

Regarding Magazine, only this week on a radio quiz I won a T-shirt and the CD and DVD of their concerts in Manchester and London in February of this year . :thumb:
'About the Weather' is not a featured track but I ain't complaining. Thanks sistasheila, great to meet the geezer bubble up at source. :D

I'm jealous :p
I've been miserably trying to scrounge about the funds for that "Real Life + Thereafter" set. To no avail :(

As the DVD is part of the package which I'm not sending that will still attract those who can buy; in Morrissey's spirit of sharing (!), and in thanks to others on the site who have posted rare sounds to enjoy in the past, I've uploaded the album tracks on sendspace. I hope this works:

thanks for this sista!

Re: TWO Unseen Robert Mackie letters (not included in mackie's "words by morrissey")

You'd never believe what my sister can do with cotton wool and tennis racket!

I maybe wrong, but in here Morrissey was just teasing Robert, any words can be replaced in cotton wool and tennis racket.
If you put orange and apple, TV and record player etc, you know what I mean.

Re: TWO Unseen Robert Mackie letters (not included in mackie's "words by morrissey")

Point of Order...

"Frankly Charming" was NOT written by John Hunt with Hannah Bayman.

It was a solo effort by John.

Hannah Bayman wrote her own fanzine "Miserable Lies" which, eventually, went a bit anti-Moz.

The connection between John and Hannah is that they dated for a while and organised a Smiths/Moz convention in London which was covered by Laurence Armstrong Hughes for the BBC World Service (where Johnny Rogan was interviewed along with me!)

John Hunt is now the leader of Glasgow indie mafia, Belle and Sebastian without the tunes, wannabe, never-will-be; "Butcher Boy"

So there.

Thanks Sista -

I LOVE his early correspondence; the man's synapses fired like a fully-automatic weapon.

It's sounding like he rather fancied this Robert! 'No hanky-panky'...'Texan sex ritual' indeed :thumb:

Re: TWO Unseen Robert Mackie letters (not included in mackie's "words by morrissey")

Attached is an excerpt from some lame zine I had done in the '90s. I had published a letter from Robert Mackie (with permission). I had asked him
1) why he didn't include his own letters in "Words by Morrissey" so we could get a better idea of the exchange between them,
2) his selection process for including the letters in his 'zine (because of the other letters published exclusively in other zines it was known that he didn't print all the letters in one 'zine),
3) his impression of Morrissey as a person now that he is a famous popstar,
4) If he is a fan of the music of the Smiths/Morrissey, and
5) background/follow-up on Mackie's personal situation (very interesting that the guy Moz used to chide for being a virgin is the same guy who ends up married with 2 children while Moz proclaims/ed himself celibate and lovelorn). I had written something to the effect that Mackie must've been exaggerating when he said his love life was nonexistent. I had wondered why he let Moz tease him so much about that. And Mozzer's mocking of Mackie's celibacy and spouting the cliche' "no man is an island" are very amusing considering Mozzer's later public image.

Although he hasn't answered mail sent to his contact addy since the mid-90s, I went ahead and blacked it out since someone else also did so in some other letter just in case Mackie still lives there and just does not want to be disturbed by requests for reprints of "Words by Morrissey".

Thank you very much for posting the scan Mel.

Unfortunately I find Robert's handwriting is rather difficult to read.

Is anyone can transcribe it for us? :o

You're welcome. I received this letter sometime between 1993 and 1995.

Here's my transcription:

Dear Mel

Thanks for the letter, hey two years is nothing, not when you are my age. I heard about the inclusion of my zine in the e-mail, trouble is I can't get access to read it as I do not own a p.c. etc.

My letters in response were bland in the utmost. I ain't no wordsmith, the problem all realy (sic) sprang from Steven answering my add (sic) in the personal column. He misinterpreted my plea for a friend as hatred for my home city of Glasgow, this does not realy (sic) explain things but I deserved the criticisms from Steven, if only for being so naive.

My selection process for the letters was basic, I only published those which detailed something of Steven's life, tastes etc at the time.

Present personal impressions of Steven are that he is a Mega star, talented Lyricist, blah, blah, blah and that he would be unaproachable (sic) now. I do not think his personality/character has changed much, I just think that as so much time has elapsed that ain't anything in common now. This is also partly why we stopped writing as our lives were changing so much and as you said Steven was launching his new career.

My career has been in Engineering. I presently work as a Quality Engineer for -------- -----; married and have two daughters 1 yr & 5 yrs old.

You think wrong, my sex life at that time did not exist, again as I was realy (sic) naive and had no social desires to mix with people.

The Smiths & Morrissey musicaly (sic) have maintained a high profile in my record collection, as I state above I fitted neetly (sic) into the Smith's (sic) fan stereotype. I discovered the Smiths via a bill poster sent to me for a record "Hand in glove" by the Smith's (sic), upon purchasing I noted Morrissey credited and thought "Is it Steven," this question was answered by their inclusion on The Tube, a music program (sic) on t.v. I tried to contact Steven to arrange a meeting during their College circuit tour this failed as his mother would not / did not pass my message on to him. The rest is history. As I said earlier I now have nothing in common with Steven therefore would not wish to embarass (sic) myself by meeting him.

Hope you enjoyed reading this and will excuse my spelling.

Ta ra the noo
Robert

Thank you so much sistasheila and Mel Torment for posting these letters! That was a great read! :D
I hope there are more unknown letters somewhere...

LOL !
Yeah, his spelling is even worse than Morrissey's and that's saying something.
The letters are, however, very entertaining to read and he certainly gets the insults in...Don't worry about being Scottish, somebody has to be...I like that one! Poor Robert that he never got any replies from Moz after he became famous, talk about being dropped like the proverbial hot potato:lbf:
