In 2007, and early 2008, we put up polls for all 234 then released Morrissey and The Smiths-songs. More than 40,000 votes were cast and this resulted in The Morrissey/Smiths Top 100, or indeed, The Morrissey/The Smiths Top 234. In 2009/2010 we updated this chart with the 25 new songs that were released in 2008-2010. The final results of 2010, the 'Top 259', can be viewed here. Now, 4 years on, many people have asked me to continue with the polls as since the last one 25 new Morrissey-songs have been released.
So we'll start with the songs that were released in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and we'll end with the 18 songs from World Peace Is None of Your Business.

So here it goes. Let's hope for as big a turn-out as in 2007 and 2010 and, once again, vote with your heart, not with your mind.

Song 269: Earth is the Loneliest Planet (Morrissey/Gustavo Manzur)

Earth is the loneliest planet of all
earth is the loneliest planet of all
day after day you say "one day, one day"
day after day you say "one day, one day"
but you're in the wrong place
and you've got the wrong face
and humans are not really very humane
and Earth is the loneliest planet of all
Earth is the loneliest planet of all
live with aloneness that no one else knows
time after time you say "next time, next time"
time after time you say "next time, next time"
but you fail as a woman
and you lose as a man
(we do what we can)
and Earth is the cruelest place you will
never understand

but you're in the wrong skin
and the skin that you're in says
"urgh, let it begin"
and Earth is the loneliest planet of all

Earth is the loneliest planet of all
earth is the loneliest planet of all
day after day you say "one day, one day"
day after day you say "one day, one day"
but there's always a reason why you're refused
they always blame you, you, you
and there is nothing anyone can do.

This one has really grown on me. I know it's Moz-by-numbers and rationally I should give it a 6, but for whatever reason I like it more than that. So 7.

My least favorite track on the album proper. I like it, and I don't skip it, but it's a "6". As I said in another thread, this album is still great to me considering only 3 of the 12 tracks fall below an "8" rating IMO.

In fact, I have the album already playing as I write this.

My least favourite song on the new album, I think it's the weakest song on the album and I'm leaning towards not actually liking it.

I find this song to be better after some distance. After hearing it live a few times on the Spring tour, I thought it was quite boring and trite. Then the song was released officially in advance of the album and, while a modest improvement to the live versions, was still the weakest of the four advance-release songs.

After only a couple weeks, I stopped listening to the album out of a general and overpowering sense of 'meh'. I listened to it again a couple times recently and found this song to be fairly enjoyable, but only enough so to earn a 4.

yeah its not bad but people have taken a position and wont be convinced by anyone or anything which just seems silly. its just a song with no surprises and very typical morrissey which seems to be everything they hate. i dont know it doesnt seem like there are many fans of morrissey here and just seem to be perpetually unhappy and dis-satisfied with anything he does.

I do wonder if my opinion on it would be different had it not been released prior to the album. I heard those first four songs that came out (from the 10”) way more than any of the others, at least for a while!

Me too. It is the ONLY track out of the whole album (deluxe included) that I sometimes skip. I gave it a 3 which in hindsight is probably a bit harsh. Shoulda given it a 4 or possibly a 5. I don't hate it just stands apart from the rest as a weak track.

thats how i feel about smiler with knife. i always skip that song. i love the way the guitar in earth is drops and splinters, good stuff

Well, I really like it. It seems to encompass the typical Morrissey longing for human connection fused with an ever-present misanthropy. I like the contradictory nature of the song.

"but there's always a reason why you're refused

I give it an 8.
