8/10 A meandering tune, but I love they way it explodes towards the end, like getting two songs for the price of one!

Yes, I like the 'explosion' too.

I love this song--it's a great 'depressing' tune for me... "How sad are we and how sad have we been"...(I hear that in my head a lot)..."we'll let you know oh, but only if you're really interested" -fantastic lyrics. I'd die to hear this live. A fine nine.

A beautiful song - one of Alain's best compositions and one of the better tracks on Your Arsenal. It was especially transcendent live - when Morrissey's glorious falsetto would fill the hall as he removed his shirt in the atmospheric lighting. Really, it's an absolute SHAME that the Arsenal tour was not properly documented for posterity. The studio version is not quite a classic, though. I gave it a 9.

Almost perfect, apart from the middle section with the crowd noise - it goes on a bit too long for me. Very good song from a very good album. 8 from me.

9/10
"How sad are we? and how sad have we been? We'll let you know, oh but only if you're really interested."
Beautiful lyrics
but it doesn't quite stick to my head like his other songs

a 10

a work of art from Your Arsenal, I won't waste too much time writing on this
classic beaty

we may seem cold
or may even be
the most depressing people
you willl ever know

only if you're really interested

This and National Front Disco make such a powerful centerpiece, in my opinion, and should probably always be played together. One of my favorite songs by anyone and an easy 10.

We may seem cold,
Or we may even be
The most depressing people you've ever known.
At heart, what's left, we sadly know
That we are the last truly British people you'll ever know.
We are the last truly British people you will ever know

love that lyric.10 for me

Lovely chord sequence and a nice bit of strumming action from Mr Whyte.
Wish Moz would do more strummy songs.
But the ending really ruins it for me. Claims of being the last truly British person make me feel uneasy...

Nice enough song, but how on earth can people give it a 9 or 10?

Houdini, the only way this poll would give an accurate result would be to ask everybody to rank all songs individually & then to add them. There must be a tonne of people who've not voted less than 8 for any song!

I disagree. This poll is giving a fascinating insight into the quality of the songs. It's irrelevant that some people never give less than 8. Every song has its own unique average score. The best ones receive 10/10 from at least 50% of us, the worst ones probably only get 10 from less than 5% of us. A small number of people giving high marks to everything only has a tiny impact on the average scores.
Very much looking forward to seeing the next set of average scores...

I don't give a lot of 9 and 10, but this one is in my top five of his solo career
